India’s road safety journey is at a pivotal inflection point. Bharat NCAP 1.0 successfully placed vehicle safety into the national consciousness, nudging manufacturers and consumers alike to value crashworthiness and occupant protection. As the framework now evolves into Bharat NCAP 2.0, the moment calls for a decisive shift — from protecting lives during a crash to preventing crashes altogether. This is where Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication becomes indispensable.

V2X enables vehicles to communicate seamlessly with other vehicles (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P), and networks (V2N). In practical terms, it allows a car to “see” beyond the driver’s line of sight — alerting them to a sudden slowdown ahead, a pedestrian at a blind intersection, or hazardous road conditions communicated directly by traffic infrastructure. In a country like India, where mixed traffic, vulnerable road users, and dynamic road conditions are the norm, this predictive capability is not a luxury; it is a necessity.

As highlighted by the ITS India Forum, Bharat NCAP 2.0 presents a rare opportunity to embed V2X readiness directly into vehicle safety assessment. Including V2X as a scored parameter would send a strong market signal — encouraging OEMs to invest in connected safety technologies while ensuring future vehicles are compatible with India’s rapidly expanding digital traffic ecosystem.

Importantly, India is already laying the groundwork. National platforms such as Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), Vehicle Identification and Detection Systems (VIDES), and the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) are transforming enforcement and incident analysis. V2X-enabled vehicles can act as intelligent nodes within this ecosystem, enabling real-time alerts, faster emergency response, and data-driven safety interventions. Bharat NCAP 2.0 can become the bridge that connects vehicles to this national intelligence grid.

V2X also amplifies the effectiveness of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control become far more reliable when they are informed not only by onboard sensors but also by live infrastructure and vehicle data. In dense urban corridors or high-speed highways, this synergy can dramatically reduce collision risks — especially for pedestrians and two-wheelers, who remain the most vulnerable on Indian roads.

Global safety programs have already begun moving in this direction. By aligning Bharat NCAP 2.0 with international best practices — while tailoring them to India’s unique traffic realities — India can leapfrog from adoption to leadership. A dedicated “Connected Safety Rating” that recognizes V2X, cybersecurity resilience, e-Call integration, and data recording standards would further reinforce this ambition.

Under the leadership of Mr. Gadkari and the policy vision of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Bharat NCAP 2.0 can redefine what vehicle safety means in India. Not just safer cars — but smarter, communicative, and collaborative mobility systems.

The question before us is no longer whether India should adopt V2X, but whether we are ready to make it foundational. Bharat NCAP 2.0 is the right moment to do so — placing prevention, connectivity, and intelligence at the very core of road safety.
