The objective of DSA is to transform the Democratic Party. That constitutes one avenue of social change work. Some of us belong to both DSA and the Green Party but focus on the work of building up an alternative. The establishment duopoly of this country makes that very challenging. Greens don’t yet get a lot of votes as we run our essentially educational campaigns: https://www.gp.org/2025_candidates

When all the totals are in I’ll probably wind up with just under 1,000 votes this year. But we have in mind the experience of the Green Party of England. For many years there was an only-two-significant-choices system (Conservative and Labour) in that country, also. The bottom line is this: The need for Green politics should be obvious. The current trajectories of our society are socially inequitable and ecologically irresponsible. The Green Party stands for ecology, social justice, demilitarization, a more grassroots form of democracy, and the rejuvenation of our decimated local community life. This ideology is slowly but surely resonating all over the world. Breakthroughs are occurring country-by-country such that Greens increasingly get elected to legislative bodies and, meanwhile, help foster the movements that are patiently building the new society within the shell of the old (see: https://AltairEcoVillage.org).

The ecosocialist “greening of society” movement involves a significant re-direction and therefore can only gain traction over time, incrementally. But recognition of how necessary it is makes headway, globally, year after year and decade after decade. It is irrepressible. It embodies and represents hope for the future of the human race.

Do you remember the cover of the book The Greening of America in 1970? That was 55 years ago, but the general outlines of the pathway forward were already evident to those of us in the movement back then: “There is a revolution coming. It will not be like revolutions of the past. It will not require violence to succeed, and it cannot be successfully resisted by violence. It promises a higher reason, a more human-scale community, and a liberated individual. Its ultimate creation will be a renewed relationship to the Self, to society, to nature, and to the land.”
