What the Hell’s Going On with E20 in India?
If you’ve been riding or driving around India lately, you’ve probably felt it: your fuel gauge now acts like it’s permanently depressed, your mileage took a nosedive, and your vehicle feels like it’s dragging itself uphill — on a flat road. You’re not going crazy. Welcome to the E20 experiment that nobody really asked for.

Welcome to the E20 experiment.
Yo! what’s up baddies.. It’s been a while I was chilling in existential crisis, and planning to work on something big, but then something big happened, and that made me write this today.
Let me set the Scene:
Our humble garage (read: pending EMI graveyard) features a full cast of Indian road royalty:
- A white Activa 5G (2019), the family MVP with nearly 80,000 km under its belt, now passed down like a legacy sword to me and my younger cousin.
- A 2020 Blue Activa 6G, my aunt’s trusty steed.
- A 2022 Hero Pleasure Plus XTEC (a.k.a. my first cousin’s two-wheeler “statement”).
- A 6 month old TVS iQube, my second aunt’s. Yes, an EV. Everyone rides it now because fuel prices turned the others into luxury items.
- And finally, a 3-year-old Maruti Suzuki that nobody at home uses unless someone’s renting it. It just sits there, quietly depreciating.
Now here’s the plot twist , and it hits harder than a pothole at 60 km/h.
Mileage Madness
For years, the Activa 5G got us through a whole week on just 1 litre for daily chores and night drives. That’s not a flex, we were just broke, but it worked. Last week? 2 litres. Same bike, same routine.
What. The. Hell. Same Activa. Double the fuel. Zero explanation, unless the petrol gods are just trolling us now.

Activa is god. We use it for everthing, except the above shit. 😂
My bike culture began way back when fuel was cheap, bikes had soul, and mileage was sacred. So this sudden mileage drop? Feels like a personal betrayal. Like the vehicles at home sat me down and said, “It’s not you, it’s not us, it’s ethanol.”
The iQube EV? Sips electricity and judges us.
What’s the Deal with E20?
So here’s the government’s big-brain move: introduce E20, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, and quietly make it the new normal. No announcement, nothing. Just boom: surprise, your fuel is now mixed.
Let’s skip the government’s flower-scented vocabulary and get real.
The logic?
- Cut crude oil imports.
- Promote “green fuel.”
- Support sugarcane farmers.
Sounds noble, until your scooter starts coughing and your mileage tanks.
Most stations dumped older petrol blends already. Your vehicle, compatible or not, is drinking the E20 Kool-Aid.
Oh, and it gets better. Some courts actually tried to slow this down. But the Supreme Court? Nah. They gave it the green light. So here we are with force-fed ethanol like it’s a health tonic, while our engines silently scream in octane withdrawal.
So in the name of “green transition,” we’ve basically entered a new era of high-maintenance petrol.
What does that mean for us? In simple terms:
Pay more. Go less. Complain louder.
Why Your Ride Feels Like It’s Been Popping Sleeping Pills
1. Ethanol = Less Boom per Litre
Let’s get nerdy for a second: ethanol has lower energy density than petrol. That means you’re literally getting less power per litre when mixed. Even the optimistic estimates say 2–5% mileage drop, and that’s for shiny new, E20-ready vehicles. Yours? older? Yeah, go ahead and multiply that by pain and also add emotional damage.

My broken wallet knows it pretty well.

2. Got an Older Vehicle? RIP Your Mileage
If your car or scooter was built before April 2023, it’s likely not E20-compliant. That means your engine is being forced to digest something it’s not designed for.
User complaints from across India have started to show up on forums and in media reports, with some vehicles experiencing 10–20%+ mileage drops, rough starts, or reduced power.

3. Parts Are Dying Quietly
Ethanol isn’t just messing with mileage, it’s chewing through components. Rubber seals, fuel lines, gaskets, hoses basically, anything not built for ethanol is slowly waving the white flag.
One survey found that 28% of older petrol vehicle owners reported leaks, wear, or random failures after the E20 rollout.
And guess what? Me and my cousin, both mechanical engineers, couldn’t confirm it either ; ) until we hit the shop for E20-compatible parts. The mechanic looked us dead in the eye and asked for two diamonds and our last shred of sanity.

Lies They’re Telling You (and What They’re Not)
- “No engine damage, just a slight dip.” The official line. 1–2% for some, 3–6% for others. (Business Today)
- Automakers: “E20 safe.” But they warn: if your car wasn’t calibrated, bad luck.
- Some even claim you can’t recalibrate older cars due to emission norms. So, no escape.
What You Can Do
- Use premium or higher-octane petrol if available.
- Replace seals, hoses, and fuel lines with ethanol-compatible parts.
- Ride gently, no redlines or rapid accelerations.
- Keep petrol in the tank; ethanol pulls water.
- Track your mileage and performance changes.
- Consider upgrading if your vehicle is too old.
Final Word
Make no mistake: E20 is being forced on everyone, regardless of compatibility. Your mileage drop isn’t a myth. That “slight dip” narrative? Pure gaslighting. If your scoots, cars, Activas feel slower, weaker, or just drained, you’re not paranoid, you’re woke.
So rant, fix, adapt, but know this: we’re stuck in the E20 era, like it or not. And yeah, it’s going to be messy.
Adaption needs time and going abroad also needs time. Choose wisely. 😉
