Lessons in Resilience

Mental Health Awareness Week 11–17 May 2026: Take action

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we invite everyone to support good mental health. Small actions can foster hope and reduce feelings of helplessness. While individual efforts are valuable, collective action amplifies our impact.

Every space carries its own energy.

A desk. A room. A city. A country. Dubai has its own unmistakable energy.

I was there last week for a leadership workshop and coaching sessions. And across every single interaction, one theme kept surfacing — Wellness.

The ongoing conflict has touched people in ways that are hard to fully articulate. The direct impact may be minimal, and the government has done a remarkable job of caring for its people. Yet beneath the surface — fear lingers. Anxiety about safety. Uncertainty about the future.

And still, the can-do spirit was impossible to miss.

The love for this country, even among expatriates, is real. Dubai has given so much to so many. That bond runs deep. War is never easy to endure. But these challenges have a way of revealing who we truly are.

I stood and watched and watched the traffic flow; many times, for long stretches. “Traffic is less”, as tourists missing & residents away.

Life appeared normal. Business as usual. But the undercurrent of emotion was just as real.

Every challenge opens a new door. I find myself wondering what will emerge from this one.

So what is our choice?

To protect our sanity. To tend to our wellness — at every level. This is not just a personal responsibility. It is a collective one.

Here’s how I think about it:

  1. Physical Wellness — The foundation. What we eat, how we move, how we sleep. Yoga is non-negotiable.

  2. Mental Wellness — The mind is the hardest thing to manage. So we must be deliberate about it. Reflective journaling is a powerful starting point.

  3. Emotional Wellness — Empathy begins with the self, then extends outward — to others, to community, to society. The journey from I to We.

  4. Social Wellness — We don’t thrive in isolation. It takes an entire ecosystem — a village, a community, a society — to help us become who we’re meant to be. We are part of that ecosystem.

  5. Creative Wellness — This may not feel like the right time to create. But we are wired for it. Keep that flame alive. Be a creator instead of a consumer of content. That itself will help at all levels.

  6. Spiritual Wellness — Perhaps the deepest anchor of all. “We are spiritual beings on a human journey.” Chanting, meditation, prayer — whatever connects you to something larger than yourself.

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavanthu. May all beings in all worlds be happy.
