It is often stated that teaching is a calling. Many of us in the profession have the sense that we were born teachers. Or at least, that we were born “non-doers.”

But with increasing class sizes, book bans, and ever-increasing expectations, teacher burnout is as real as a heart attack. Is it time to throw in the towel and start your new career as a telemarketer or state executioner?

If you’ve experienced more than TWO of the following signs, it’s probably time to make the move

1. You notice that for the last three years, you come home from work on International Teachers’ Day and fire up Gladiator
2. You’ve developed a small twinge in your left knee that acts up in the first week of August every year
3. Addressing circle time, you referred to nap time as “The Forever Sleep”
4. Whenever you meet a doctor/accountant/sewage worker/bulldozer operator/Marine at a neighborhood barbecue party, you invariably find yourself responding, “It must be so nice to have a job with so much peace and quiet”
5. You secretly smile every time you see a ChatGPT essay and think, “At least I won’t need to underline missing commas”
6. When you filed your taxes last year, you ticked “yes” for “dependents” despite having lived alone since you were eighteen
7. In a moment of madness, you caught yourself scribbling progress reports to stuff into your children’s Christmas stockings
8. You can’t read the local paper anymore without a red pen in hand
9. At your book club, you reminded your friends to raise their hands when the discussion of 50 Shades of Grey got too heated
10. You end all of your Eyes Wide Shut key parties with the “clean up” song
