She’s always been in me, right beneath the mask I wore to hide my face. The true nature I was too scared to embrace. Tucked away safely under the facade displayed to the world as an absolute truth. The root of my being, all I ever wanted to exclaim from under the duct tape that covered my mouth.
She possesses the strength that I didn’t know resided in me, the courage to rise when I fall and scrape my knee, and the wisdom I needed to set myself free.
A while back, I went through a phase where I’d become completely enamoured with self-improvement, stripping away my mask and letting my beautiful heart boldly shine through for the entire world to see. Though close to the end of that period, I discovered that I hadn’t improved anything; I was merely peeling myself layer by layer, like an onion, revealing my true self as the end product.
It taught me those layers were my protection against the storms and tsunamis in this world, and ultimately I stood bare as I took the greatest fall of all.
And when I was beaten down by life, unable to find the ledge to pull myself back up, God was my saviour. Through a rebirth, I entered the door leading to the core of my strength, which I didn’t know lingered right beyond the borders of surrendering my will for the good of all.
For so long, I was searching, waiting, hoping to find that thing or person who would make me feel good enough, but it wasn’t sustainable, and I’d always find myself back at square one.
It was a long and dark road; for many moons, I thought I’d never find my way home.
Currently, when times seem bleak, I know I’ve found the centre of my universe— the God who saved my life when all I wanted to do was run and hide. Curl into my human nature and wish the day away.
But this time it’s for keeps; this time I’ve reached the peak, and if it feels like I’m slipping or falling, I’d know He’s right there waiting to break my fall and give me peace of mind one moment at a time.
She is the little broken pieces of me that scattered from the tender age of three, shards of pain now renewed and beaming with hope. Hope for a future not planned across five or ten years but a horizon of tiny possibilities made a reality by the sorrows that now feel like lifetimes ago.
We walk the earth as children and inevitably lose ourselves in the process of rushing to grow up, only to find that the ultimate happiness and joy are buried in those lazy sunny afternoons we now call child’s play.
She is the seed planted within me, lying dormant for decades, patiently waiting for the day the rains would come, so she could bear fruit and feed the nations with His every word.
