If you skipped the Platforms State of the Union this year, here’s the sentence that should pull you back:
SiriKit is formally deprecated as of WWDC 2026. App Intents is now the only way Siri can reach into your app.
Not “encouraged.” Not “preferred.” The only way.
App Intents is now the only key that fits the lock. If your app doesn’t expose App Intents, Siri can’t discover it, invoke it, or include it in multi-app workflows.
That means if your app hasn’t migrated before iOS 27 ships publicly this fall, it simply won’t show up when the new Gemini-powered Siri tries to take action across apps. No voice commands. No shortcut chaining. No cross-app workflows. Invisible.
What Actually Changed at WWDC 2026
Apple rebuilt Siri around a new large language model architecture — one designed for natural, cross-app interactions rather than the command-matching approach of the original assistant. The new Siri AI isn’t just a smarter voice assistant; it’s a system-level agent that can chain actions across apps, understand on-screen context, and complete multi-step tasks without the user opening a single app.
The catch? It routes exclusively through App Intents.
At the Platforms State of the Union, Apple issued a formal deprecation notice for SiriKit — the INExtension and intent classes that many apps have relied on since iOS 10. Your existing SiriKit code will still compile under Xcode 27. You'll just get deprecation warnings. And your app will be invisible to the new Siri.
Based on Apple’s migration guidance, developers appear to have roughly a two-to-three-year window before SiriKit support is likely removed — somewhere around the iOS 29 timeframe. But the visibility hit starts now, the moment iOS 27 ships to devices this September.

Siri AI routes every third-party action through App Intents. If you haven’t exposed your app’s capabilities through the framework, the assistant has no way to reach you — regardless of how long your app has been on the App Store.
In the SiriKit era, Siri knew about your app because you registered supported domains. In the Siri AI era, Siri knows about your app only through App Intents.
What Is App Intents, and Why Does It Matter So Much Now?
App Intents is a Swift framework that’s been available since iOS 16. It lets you expose your app’s actions and content to Siri, Spotlight, Shortcuts, and other system surfaces — without requiring the user to open the app.
Think of it as a machine-readable contract between your app and the OS. You declare: “My app can do these things, with these parameters, and here’s what to show when it’s done.” Siri reads that contract and can invoke your app’s capabilities on behalf of the user at any point — but only if that contract exists.
Here’s what a basic App Intent looks like — this is what “Reorder Last Order” looks like for a food delivery app:

WWDC 2026 also introduced App Intents 2.0, which adds:
- Richer entity types — expose more complex data structures to Siri
- Multi-turn conversational follow-ups — Siri can ask clarifying questions mid-action
- Per-intent privacy manifest declarations — explicitly route sensitive actions on-device vs. cloud
The Migration: What You Actually Need to Do
Step 1 — Audit Your SiriKit Code
Open Xcode 27 and build. Every INExtension, INIntent, and INInteraction reference will now throw a deprecation warning. Start there. Inventory what your app currently exposes via SiriKit — voice commands, Shortcuts donations, intent handlers — and map each to an equivalent App Intent.
Step 2 — Pick Your Top 3–5 Actions
Don’t boil the ocean. Identify the three to five things users most want to trigger by voice or shortcut, and start there.

Step 3 — Declare On-Device vs. Cloud Routing
If your app handles health data, financial information, or anything regulated, use the new per-intent privacy manifest declarations to ensure those actions stay on-device. This is both a privacy win and a compliance requirement for many app categories.
Step 4 — Test on a Device with Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require an iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16+. The simulator won’t fully replicate the new Siri’s conversational flows or multi-turn behavior. Get a qualifying device into your testing rotation before July.
The Deadline Is Tighter Than It Looks
iOS 27 developer betas started June 8. Public beta lands in July. General availability is expected in September 2026, following Apple’s typical fall release pattern.
That’s roughly 90 days from today.
You don’t need to migrate every SiriKit integration before then. But if your app’s core Siri-facing functionality isn’t on App Intents by fall, your users will ask Siri to do something — and Siri will either redirect them to a competitor’s app or tell them it can’t help.
One more thing worth noting: Siri AI won’t be available in the EU or China at iOS 27 launch. Apple cited the EU’s Digital Markets Act as the reason for the exclusion. If your audience is primarily European, you have slightly more runway — but the deprecation clock is still ticking, and the migration is mandatory regardless of geography.
This Has Happened Before
Remember App Tracking Transparency? When Apple made it mandatory in iOS 14.5, teams that hadn’t prepared scrambled for weeks. Revenue dropped overnight for apps that hadn’t built a path forward.
