I’ve done quite a few “crazy” things which can be better classified as damn stupid than crazy. Many of them involve alcohol… the demon drink.

Bribing two policemen to let me go free… and not with money. I was caught driving the wrong way through the university grounds drunk as a skunk.

Having mouthwash in my purse when flying from Glasgow to Dublin in 2006. I had forgotten I had it. I drank it all and threw the empty bottle in the bin. I think I have already told this story.

Having marijuana in my purse when visiting my son in prison. I had forgotten all about it until I saw the sniffer dog. Then I declared it. I don’t know which was the silliest part. That was a costly mistake, but it’s a very long story.

But I think the craziest thing I ever did was break into the RAAF base in Townsville. Well it wasn’t just me. I was in an old Holden chockablock full of guys. I was sitting in the front on someone’s lap. I was the only girl. I don’t remember if I knew any of these guys, but I do remember I was wearing my bikini. I don’t know if this was the driver’s secret plan (maybe it was Commem week) but I knew nothing about it.

He drove straight past the guard — the gate was open — and up to where the planes were parked. A RAAF person appeared and was quite angry, threatening us with breaking into military property without permission or some such charge. When they realised we were Uni students just out for a bit of Commem fun, they let us off with a severe warning. It did show how lax their security was, but this was the late sixties and nothing was like it is now. You’d probably be shot if you did this in the US.
