A Boeing 757 doppelgänger? The story of the Tupolev Tu-204/214

The Boeing 757 is one of the most iconic aircraft still flying today. But did you know that the Soviet Union developed a remarkably similar jet of its own?

Introduced in 1982, the Boeing 757 was designed to replace the fuel‑hungry, three‑engine Boeing 727 of the 1960s. It featured efficient high-bypass Rolls-Royce engines and an advanced cockpit avionics suite, which allowed pilots certified on the 757 to also fly the Boeing 767.

Meanwhile in the USSR, the Tupolev Tu‑154 which also was a tri‑jet with tail-mounted engines similar to the 727, had been in service since the late 1960s. By the 1980s, it was becoming outdated and inefficient, prompting the need for a more modern replacement.

Enter the Tupolev Tu‑204. This twin‑engine jet featured high-bypass turbofan engines, a six‑abreast cabin, and a design that at first glance, looked strikingly similar to the Boeing 757.

Like its American counterpart, the 757, the Tu‑204 was offered in both passenger and freighter versions.

In the United States, the Boeing 757 serves in a VIP role as the C‑32A, part of the presidential fleet, best known as “Air Force Two” when carrying the Vice President. It can also fly the President when operating from runways too short for the larger VC‑25A (Air Force One).

The Tu‑204 has also seen specialized adaptations, including use as an airborne command post, communications relay, and flying laboratory.

Interestingly, while most Tu‑204s used domestically produced Aviadvigatel PS‑90 high-bypass engines, Tupolev also offered a Tu‑204‑120 variant powered by Rolls-Royce RB211 engines, the same type used on the Boeing 757, along with some Western avionics and systems.

Now, let’s look at the differences.

The Boeing 757 first flew on February 19, 1982, in Renton, Washington. By then, seven airlines had placed orders. It entered commercial service in January 1983 with Eastern Air Lines on the Atlanta to Tampa route.

The Tupolev Tu‑204, however, made its maiden flight on January 2, 1989, in the USSR. By that time, only a few orders existed, and the timing was unfortunate-the Soviet Union collapsed shortly afterward. The Tu‑204 finally entered service in 1996 with Aeroflot, roughly 13 years after the 757’s debut.

Production numbers tell the rest of the story. Boeing built more than 1,000 757s over a span of just over 20 years, while only about 90 Tu‑204s have been produced over three decades, though limited production continues today.

In terms of range, the Boeing 757 can fly nearly 4,000 nautical miles, compared to the Tu‑204’s roughly 1,800 nautical miles.

The 757‑200 is considered the standard model, while the 757‑300 has an extended fuselage for higher passenger capacity. The Tu‑204‑100 is the standard version, whereas the Tu‑204‑300 features a shorter fuselage but slightly greater range, though still less than that of the 757.

One particularly interesting feature of the Tu‑204 is its wing and tail design, which naturally resists ice buildup. Because of this, it does not require a traditional wing anti‑icing system, unique among modern jetliners.

For an aircraft developed in the 1980s, the Tu‑204 was technologically advanced, featuring a glass cockpit and fly‑by‑wire controls.

While the Tu‑204 is often criticized as a look‑alike of the Boeing 757, the two jets have distinct characteristics. Each was shaped by its own design philosophy and built to serve the needs of very different aviation environments.
