Desk　/　Bureau

The bottom drawer on the right side of the desk.

The metal handle is slightly tarnished.

When I pull it, the wood whispers with a low, scraping sound.

The back is dark.

Not even daylight reaches it.

Inside is an envelope.

White paper.

In the corner, today’s date, written small.

It hasn’t been sealed yet.

Only the crease runs perfectly straight.

You still can’t reach this drawer.

You stretch up on your toes, resting your chin on the edge of the desk.

“What’s inside?” you ask.

I correct myself: “Something important.”

The envelope holds the present me.

The doubts I carry.

The fears I keep.

Even so, the things I hide when I’m with you.

On nights when my breathing carries down the hall, I sit at the desk and write this.

I close the drawer.

The sound is brief, sinking into the room.

By the time you open it, I will have grown a little older.

Even then, on this page, I will still be looking up at you.

La poignée en métal est légèrement ternie.

Quand je le tire, le bois murmure d’un faible grincement.

L’arrière est sombre.

Même la lumière du jour n’y pénètre pas.

À l’intérieur, une enveloppe.

Papier blanc.

Dans un coin, la date d’aujourd’hui, écrite en petit.

Elle n’est pas encore scellée.

Seule la pliure est parfaitement droite.

Tu n’atteins pas encore ce tiroir.

Tu te mets sur la pointe des pieds et poses ton menton sur le bord du bureau.

« Qu’y a-t-il dedans ? »

demandes-tu.

Je me reprends : « Quelque chose d’important. » L’enveloppe contient le moi d’aujourd’hui.

Mes doutes. Mes peurs. Et pourtant, ce que je cache quand tu es là.

Les nuits où mon souffle atteint le couloir, je m’assieds au bureau et écris ceci.

Je referme le tiroir.

Le bruit est bref, il s’enfonce dans la pièce.

Quand tu ouvriras cette enveloppe, j’aurai un peu vieilli.

Même alors, sur cette page, je te regarderai encore.
