The story revolves around Aaron Eliyahu (Salim Kumar), a Jew residing in Mala, Kerala. With only a handful of Jews left in the region, the community is closely knit. Aaron sets out on a journey to document the history of Jews in India.

During this trip, he meets with an accident, and his belongings are sent back to his family. Believing him to be dead, his family migrates to Israel, leaving their property to the local council on the condition that it would be returned should Aaron ever come back.

In reality, Aaron survives and recuperates for years in the holy city of Varanasi. When he finally returns to Mala, he finds that his house has been converted into a post office and much of his ancestral land has been usurped by others. Old, injured, and limping, he is recognized only by his childhood friend Beeran (Babu Annur), who takes him in and cares for him.

Aaron begins a legal battle to reclaim his property, but he is unable to prove his identity as the rightful heir. To make matters worse, his only supporting witness turns hostile. He tries to publish the manuscript he wrote about the Jewish community, but no publisher shows interest. Defeated and disillusioned, Aaron is eventually thrown out of his own home and repeatedly rejected by the society he once belonged to.

Salim Kumar delivers the performance of a lifetime. Known mostly for comic roles, here he transforms himself into a deeply moving, tragic figure. His portrayal of Aaron is subtle, powerful, and masterful.

Karutha Joothan is a slow-burn, socially relevant film that examines the moral compromises people make to survive. At its core lie themes of corruption, greed, anxiety, rejection, and disdain — all portrayed with remarkable sensitivity.

The film also benefits from breathtaking cinematography by Sreejith Vijayan, a superbly crafted script, and taut direction. Salim Kumar not only writes with depth but also carries the film with conviction, making Karutha Joothan a truly magnificent cinematic achievement. IMDB 7/10
