How many dreams have been placed on hold because we convinced ourselves we weren’t ready?
Most of us have said it at one time or another. I’ll start when I have more money. I’ll apply after I get more experience. I’ll write that book when I have more time. I’ll travel when life settles down. I’ll take better care of myself next month.
We become experts at postponing the life we want because we’re waiting for the perfect set of circumstances. Somewhere along the way, we begin believing that success, happiness, and purpose are reserved for a future version of ourselves — a version that is somehow more prepared, more confident, and more capable than the person we are today.
The problem is that perfection is a moving target.
As soon as one obstacle disappears, another one takes its place. We pay off one bill, and another arrives. We finally find extra time, only to discover new responsibilities waiting for us. We gain experience but begin doubting whether it’s enough. The finish line keeps moving because life never completely settles down.
If we’re always waiting for ideal conditions, we may spend our entire lives waiting.
The truth is that very few meaningful things begin at the perfect moment. Businesses are often started with limited resources. Families are raised without instruction manuals. Careers change unexpectedly. Ministries grow from humble beginnings. Dreams become reality because someone chose to begin before everything felt certain.
Faith has always required movement.
Throughout Scripture, God rarely revealed the entire journey before asking someone to take the first step. Abraham left his homeland without knowing his destination. Moses stood before the Red Sea with no visible solution. Peter stepped out of the boat before he knew what walking on water would feel like.
Each story carries the same lesson: obedience often comes before understanding.
That principle still applies today.
Sometimes we want God to illuminate the entire path before we’re willing to move. Yet more often than not, He provides just enough light for the next step. The rest becomes clear as we continue walking.
Fear has a remarkable ability to disguise itself as wisdom. We tell ourselves we’re “being realistic” or “waiting for the right opportunity,” when deep down we’re simply afraid of failing. Fear whispers that we’re too old, too inexperienced, too ordinary, or too late.
But fear has never been a reliable source of truth.
Every accomplished person you admire has experienced self-doubt. Every successful author once stared at a blank page. Every entrepreneur questioned whether anyone would believe in their idea. Every speaker wondered if people would listen.
The difference wasn’t the absence of fear.
The difference was that they acted anyway.
Perhaps the greatest thief of progress isn’t failure, it’s hesitation. Failure teaches lessons. Delays can often be overcome. But hesitation quietly steals opportunities that never return.
How many conversations have gone unspoken because someone waited for the perfect words? How many friendships faded because both people assumed the other would reach out first? How many talents remain hidden because someone decided they weren’t good enough to begin?
Life isn’t lived in the someday.
It’s lived in the ordinary moments that make up today.
That doesn’t mean we should act recklessly or ignore wise planning. Preparation matters. Prayer matters. Seeking counsel matters. But there comes a point when planning becomes procrastination dressed in respectable clothing.
There is a difference between preparing and postponing.
One moves you forward.
The other keeps you standing still.
I’ve come to believe that confidence is often the result of action, not the prerequisite for it. We tend to imagine that successful people woke up one morning overflowing with certainty. In reality, confidence usually grows one small victory at a time. Each step strengthens the next.
Waiting to feel completely ready may mean waiting forever.
God has never required perfection before extending purpose. He works through ordinary people with ordinary fears who are willing to trust Him with extraordinary possibilities. Time and again, Scripture reminds us that our weaknesses do not disqualify us. In fact, they often become the very places where His strength is most visible.
That truth is deeply comforting because none of us has everything figured out.
We all carry unanswered questions. We all have moments of uncertainty. We all wonder if we’re making the right decision. Yet life keeps moving whether we participate fully or remain on the sidelines.
Years from now, few people regret trying and learning. More often, they regret not trying at all.
Imagine looking back on your life decades from now. Which choice will bring greater peace? The decision to step forward despite your fears, or the decision to stay where it felt comfortable?
Comfort is appealing, but growth rarely happens there.
The life you’ve been praying for may begin with one small act of courage today. It might be sending the application you’ve rewritten a dozen times, publishing the article you’ve been afraid to share, enrolling in the class you’ve postponed, making the phone call you’ve avoided, or finally believing that your dreams deserve a chance.
You don’t need to have every answer before you begin.
You don’t need everyone’s approval.
You don’t need perfect timing.
You simply need the willingness to take the next faithful step.
Life isn’t waiting for you somewhere in the future.
It’s unfolding right now, one decision at a time.
So stop waiting for the perfect moment.
It may never come.
Instead, trust that God can do extraordinary things through someone who is simply willing to begin.
