The Secret Military City Hidden Beneath Greenland’s Ice

During the height of the Cold War, the United States embarked on some of the most ambitious and secretive military projects in history. Among them was a bizarre experiment buried deep beneath Greenland’s frozen ice sheet — a hidden underground city known as Camp Century.

What began as a scientific research station was, in reality, part of a much larger military plan that remained hidden from the public for decades.

In 1959, the U.S. Army constructed Camp Century approximately 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Greenland’s coast. Engineers carved a network of tunnels directly into the Arctic ice, creating what looked like a futuristic underground settlement.

The base featured more than twenty tunnels and included facilities rarely associated with a military outpost. There were dormitories, laboratories, workshops, a hospital, a chapel, dining halls, and even a movie theater. At its peak, more than 200 personnel lived and worked beneath the frozen surface.

To many observers, Camp Century appeared to be an impressive scientific research facility designed to study the Arctic environment.

But that wasn’t the full story.

Behind the public explanation lay a classified military operation called Project Iceworm.

The idea was astonishing: build an enormous network of tunnels beneath Greenland’s ice sheet and secretly deploy hundreds of nuclear missiles. Hidden from enemy surveillance, these missiles would be capable of striking targets throughout the Soviet Union.

Cold War tensions were at their peak, and military planners were searching for new ways to gain strategic advantages. Greenland’s remote location seemed ideal. Vast stretches of ice offered natural concealment, making it difficult for adversaries to detect missile installations.

For years, the true purpose of Camp Century remained known only to a small group of military officials.

Nuclear Power Beneath the Arctic

To support the isolated base, the Army installed a portable nuclear reactor known as PM-2A. The reactor supplied electricity and heat to the underground city, making Camp Century one of the most unusual nuclear-powered facilities ever built.

The reactor successfully operated for several years, demonstrating that nuclear energy could sustain remote military installations in extreme environments.

However, the ice itself soon became a problem.

Military planners underestimated a simple fact: glaciers move.

Although the ice sheet appeared solid and permanent, it was constantly shifting. Over time, pressure from the moving ice began deforming the tunnels and structures inside Camp Century.

Walls bent inward. Ceilings warped. Maintenance became increasingly difficult and expensive.

The dream of hiding hundreds of missiles beneath the ice slowly unraveled.

Engineers eventually realized that maintaining such a vast missile network would be impossible. The environment itself was defeating the project.

By 1967, Camp Century was abandoned.

The tunnels were left behind and gradually disappeared beneath accumulating snow and ice. For decades, the secret city faded into obscurity.

Yet the story did not end there.

Scientists have raised concerns that climate change and melting ice could eventually expose materials left behind at the site, including construction debris and potential contaminants associated with the abandoned base.

While experts continue to study the risks, the possibility that remnants of this Cold War experiment could re-emerge has renewed public interest in Camp Century.

Today, Camp Century remains one of the most fascinating examples of Cold War ambition.

It was a city beneath the ice, powered by a nuclear reactor and connected to a secret plan that could have altered the balance of global power. Yet despite enormous resources and technological ingenuity, the project ultimately failed because of a force far older and stronger than any military strategy — the slow, relentless movement of Greenland’s ice.

More than half a century later, Camp Century serves as a reminder that even the most ambitious human plans can be humbled by nature itself.
