My Travel Story in New Taipei, Taiwan

During my travels through northern Taiwan, I found myself exploring New Taipei City, a place that feels both familiar and surprisingly unique.

What makes New Taipei especially interesting is its relationship with Taipei. Geographically, New Taipei surrounds Taipei entirely, almost like a large ring wrapping around the capital.

Because of this, the city feels connected to Taipei’s fast-paced urban life, yet it also maintains a very different character of its own.

A Region Shaped by Mountains and the Sea

Many parts of New Taipei stretch toward the mountains or along the coastline. Because of this landscape, the local culture often reflects traditional crafts, fishing communities, and long-standing regional history.

Walking through some of the older districts or coastal towns, I noticed a slower rhythm compared to the capital city.

There are traditional markets, small artisan shops, and historic streets where you can still feel the connection to Taiwan’s past. Some famous old towns, like Jiufen Old Street, give visitors a glimpse into the island’s earlier mining and trading eras.

At first, I imagined New Taipei might feel somewhat rural or less developed.

But the reality was quite different.

Not Rural — Just Different

Despite its traditional atmosphere and proximity to nature, New Taipei is not a backward or isolated place.

Modern infrastructure, convenient transportation, and growing urban districts make it clear that this is still a major metropolitan area.

What surprised me most was how naturally the city blends these two sides together.

You can spend the morning exploring a mountain village or coastal harbor, and later return to a lively urban district filled with cafés, shops, and restaurants.

Instead of feeling disconnected, the contrast creates a sense that the region offers many different experiences within a single area.

A Simple but Charming Nightlife

The nightlife in New Taipei was another pleasant surprise.

Unlike some cities where nightlife is flashy or overwhelming, the evening atmosphere here feels more relaxed and intimate.

Small bars, cozy restaurants, and local gathering spots create a nightlife scene that feels simple, warm, and refined rather than extravagant.

It’s the kind of place where people gather quietly with friends, share food and drinks, and enjoy the slower rhythm of the evening.

The experience feels less about spectacle and more about comfort.

Experiencing the City’s Adult Social Culture

Like many urban areas in Taiwan, New Taipei also has its own adult social scene.

Compared to larger metropolitan centers, the atmosphere here felt more relaxed and personal. Instead of feeling commercial or intense, the environment had a surprisingly familiar and comfortable vibe.

Interestingly, the overall experience felt calmer and more welcoming than I expected — almost like discovering a hidden part of the city that reflects the same warmth found in its traditional communities.

A City That Feels Close to Home

My time in New Taipei City left me with a very different impression than I originally expected.

It is not simply an extension of Taipei, nor is it a quiet countryside region.

Instead, it feels like a place where Taiwan’s natural landscapes, traditional culture, and modern urban life quietly coexist.

Mountains, coastlines, historic streets, and friendly local neighborhoods all come together to create a city that feels authentic and unexpectedly relaxing.

In many ways, New Taipei felt less like a tourist destination and more like a place where everyday life unfolds naturally — a place that, surprisingly, can feel a little like home.
