Pet ownership has been rising steadily in recent years, and cats have proven especially skilled at accumulating devoted followers. In Taiwan, phrases like “my cat does backflips(我家貓會後空翻),” “speechless cat(傻眼貓咪),” and “annoying cat(機歪貓咪)” have worked their way into everyday conversation. So what exactly is going on? The answer is less mysterious than cats would like you to think, but it is worth unpacking properly.

Nearly Ten Thousand Years of Coexistence

The relationship between cats and humans goes back further than most people realize. The original arrangement was mutual: cats hunted the rats raiding grain stores, reducing food loss, while humans provided food in return, hoping the skilled hunters would stick around.

That partnership has evolved since then. From the musical Cats to countless animated films and internet rabbit holes, cats have never really left the center of human culture.

As for the people who find cats too aloof? The cats could not care less.

Why Cats Are So Compelling

Looking at the cats themselves, the sources of their appeal are surprisingly concrete.

There is the obvious matter of appearance. Cats are objectively good-looking: large, luminous eyes set against soft, well-kept fur that is deeply satisfying just to look at, and nearly impossible not to want to touch.

Then there is what researchers call neoteny, the retention of juvenile features. Cats have short noses and eyes that are large relative to their faces, characteristics they share with human infants. These features trigger caregiving instincts in humans automatically, generating a level of affection that goes well beyond what we extend to less visually baby-like animals.

Finally, there is the question of brand identity, because if cats were a brand, they would be a remarkably well-positioned one. Independent, selective, and slightly mysterious: this personality profile is distinct enough from other pets that cats occupy a space no other animal has managed to claim.

Why Cats Are More Popular Than Ever

None of this is new, but cat culture has accelerated in recent years, and a few social trends help explain why.

As people get older, many find themselves less drawn to high-energy social interaction. That preference tends to carry over into how they think about pets. A cat that does not demand constant attention starts to look less like a limitation and more like a feature.

The rise of personal media has also played a role. When individual identity and lifestyle are something people actively present, there is a natural resonance with an animal that has always lived entirely on its own terms. Cats, in a sense, were practicing self-branding long before anyone had a word for it.

Shifts in household structure matter too. Smaller households, couples without children, and people living alone have become a common family structure. For someone living solo, a cat offers genuine companionship without the sustained attention a dog requires. And for those without the space or capacity to keep a pet at all, cloud-adopting through social media and visiting cat cafes have emerged as ways to get some of that connection without the full commitment.

Cats do not try to win anyone over. That, perhaps more than anything else, is exactly why they keep winning.
