How Did I Come to Finally Write My Memoir?

June 27, 2026

I’ve always thought in the recesses of my noggin that I should be a writer. But life got in the way so I’ve only dabbled at the craft along the trail. The need for money, security, and the desire for recognition interfered with my true calling. Don’t get me wrong, I did find time to do some scribbling throughout the years. An article published in a local magazine, several attempts at screenwriting, millions of journal entries, letters sent and unsent, a Young Adult novel, beautifully crafted Real Estate marketing materials that were really pictures in words, and a well-received Internet newsletter about Real Estate. My subscribers reported that they loved reading it as much for the writing style as the meaty scoop on the housing market. One reader even told me he knew I was “a writer masquerading as a Realtor.”

The newsletters became my vehicle for inspirational musings and encouragement, which it turns out, was my real reason for writing them. It was to inspire others to seek their own ultimate potential, that is to excavate their personal brand of cosmic truth. I now believe God had to arrange for me to live a lot of life before I could actually inspire anyone else. And so I spent decades having adventure after adventure which gave me a modicum of wisdom and a lot of juicy experiences to write about. Now that I’m retired from selling houses, I can finally focus on my true life’s work. And my hope is that we will be able to learn a thing or two together while I commit the musings to paper that gurgle up from the cistern of our corporate soul. It’s another kind of adventure, after all, and I expect it to be fun!

Given the time, I was finally able to write about my life from the prospective of love in all its forms. It’s funny. I’d always thought memoirs are written by or about people who are about to die, or who are already dead…and who are famous enough so someone would be drawn to read about their life. As far as I know, I don’t qualify on any of these counts. My life has, however, followed an episodic pattern that lends itself to chapters, or introspective mini stories, that collect quite naturally into a memoir format. And, voilà, LoveCapades emerged. My romantic memoir which explores every kind of love imaginable, from the sexy to the sublime.

Writing the book helped me understand at a deeper level my life’s journey. But I also believe that it can spark the reader to think about their life episodes in order to see the themes and lessons of their personal drama. All of our lives form fascinating tapestries, merging the universal and the individual truths, like a weaver works the warp and woof. Each lifetime is unique, yet it shares common themes with the rest of us. In this way my story is your story and yours is mine. Being able to reflect on life’s meaning and then write about it has been extraordinarily rewarding. And well worth the wait.
