Pennies to Purpose: How Asking for Donations Taught Me to bear Rejection as part of life.
The Experience of Convincing People to Donate:
We were on a sacred mission of collecting funds and donations for a good cause. What was the cause??? Here it is….

It was a donation drive for Akhuwat and Edhi center.
To be honest, the first time I approached a stranger to ask for money for our social cause, my throat went dry. We were raising funds for Alkhidmat and Akhuwat Organizations.
My very first expectation was that other people would ignore me. Sometimes I feel that the experience turned out to be a roller coaster ride of humiliation and hopefulness for me, where I sometimes nearly lose hope.
There was a situation of open rejection when a shop owner did not even allow me to finish my message, saying, “I am not interested.” An elderly woman held out a good hope to me and said, “Thank you for trying to heal the world.” That comparison taught me that fundraising is not about misleading people; it is about providing them with a chance to contribute to a solution that is meaningful to them. It was exhausting, humiliating, embarrassing, and oddly wonderful.
Individual Vs Group Engagement: A Strategic Transition:
I tried with individual ways, but some of my colleagues used group approaches, and the differences were noticeable.
Individual Approach: When I reached out to my known people alone, the talks went deeper. I think that I need to change my narrative based on how they respond. Then I decided that if they felt worried and expressed concern about the children.
My planned goal was to make contact with local companies or markets together with my Amal friends, or to go to the places which they decided. However, starting June 8th, my university’s 7th semester final examinations took over my life. I made the decision to put my education over the fundraising drive. The situation required dealing with guilt and objectives instead of just collecting financial benefits. I was divided between my commitments to Amal and my dedication to my degree. In the end, I selected the second option (to keep myself studying), but I did not give up completely; I delivered Amal’s social welfare message to my family.
Group Approach: Not me, but some of my classmates went out as a group for one evening. This was special because of “social proof.” When people noticed them standing together and asking for funds to donate, they believed we were authentic.
Final Reflection
his fundraising event was a training camp for mental toughness. My classmates discovered that to get support for a noble cause, you must be ready to take risks with your ego. The pictures attached show the sweaty palms and the victorious smiles. The receipts in the folder verify. But the spreadsheet does not reflect the toughness, which is what they take away from this.
