Thursday Tune-In with Preetika

Hi everyone, I’ll be using my Thursdays to tune into all the books I’ve been reading and loving. I invite you to join me on my journey! Let’s go!

Today’s book:

The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate: Discoveries From a Hidden World

Author: Peter Wohlleben, German forester (this is his 16th book)

Genre: Nonfiction, Science-based, Environment-based

Book summary: Wohllenben talks passionately about the language of trees, how they use fungal networks to communicate across long distances, live in social communities (just like us), and can even hear and release scents.

What I Loved:

Pradip Krishen, India’s well-known filmmaker and environmentalist introduces the book (Krishen’s ‘Trees of Delhi: A Field Guide’ is a fantastic read).

The book is written from the heart — tree lovers will connect to the experiences Peter talks about. The author’s concern for our forests and the environment comes through clearly.

Further, there are many insightful nuggets about trees throughout the book that are eye-opening.

My Favorite Quotes:

“When you know that trees experience pain and have memories and that tree parents live together with their children, then you can no longer just chop them down and disrupt their lives with larger machines.”

“So, in the case of trees, being old doesn’t mean being weak, bowed, and fragile. Quite the opposite, it means being full of energy and highly productive.”

My Rating: Level 0 — Boring book to Level 5: Maximum maza

Ease of Reading: 3/5 (information-packed)

Maintains interest: 4/5

Violence and Abusive language: None

USP: Multiple insights into how trees and forests live, eye-opening!

A possible negative: Difficult to read at a stretch, and the material seems a bit repetitive towards the end of the book.
