Christmas Witch

Sarah Holloway stood at the kitchen window, hands submerged in warm, soapy water, watching snowflakes float gently down upon the Michigan woods outside. Each flake seemed peaceful, careless in its descent. But Sarah felt anything but peaceful. Her shoulders ached from hours of preparations, her nerves frayed from endless holiday tasks. It was Christmas Eve again, and the weight of expectation pressed heavy upon her chest.

Their home sat nestled in quiet isolation far north of Detroit, a large, sturdy house surrounded by acres of towering pines. Other houses existed, neighbors technically there, but hidden behind layers of forest and distance. It was beautiful, private, but lately the solitude had begun to feel more oppressive than comforting.

Sarah sighed, wiping her hands dry. The sweet, soulful voice of Donny Hathaway crooned softly from the living room stereo, but even his honeyed voice couldn’t calm her nerves tonight. Each year, Christmas demanded more of her, and each year, the thanks felt smaller, weaker. She smiled bitterly, hearing her husband Tom laughing warmly at something Grandma Mildred had said. Ben was upstairs, engrossed in his phone, while little Abby bounced around, bright-eyed and bubbly, lost in the pure magic of childhood.

“Mommy, look!” Abby rushed into the kitchen, her arms cradling something strange. “Mrs. Grimsley gave me this!”

Sarah turned, startled, heart quickening at the sight of the grotesque doll in Abby’s small hands. It was dressed as Santa, but twisted, wrong somehow, with eyes too dark, mouth twisted in a sinister grin. Sarah shivered, trying to mask her unease. “What is that, honey?”

“Satan Claus!” Abby giggled innocently. “Mrs. Grimsley said it’s funny. Can I keep him?”

Sarah smiled, forcing down a wave of revulsion. “Sure, sweetie. Just…don’t scare Grandma with him, okay?”

Abby laughed, running off again, leaving Sarah alone with her thoughts. She felt something small and sharp prick her finger and gasped, looking down to see a thin line of blood tracing across her palm. Shaking her head, she reached for a towel, unaware that a single drop had fallen silently upon the doll’s faded red coat.

That night, Sarah dreamed vividly, shadows dancing at the edges of her consciousness, whispering her secret frustrations aloud, filling her mind with voices she could never speak openly. “They don’t appreciate you,” the voices murmured. “They don’t understand what you sacrifice.” The whispers seeped deeper, blending with her heartbeat, forming a dark lullaby that held her captive in restless sleep.

Christmas morning arrived blanketed in white, silent and perfect. Sarah opened her eyes feeling strangely calm, a heavy weight lifted from her spirit. She hummed softly to herself, a melody both familiar and foreign. Downstairs, she found her family gathered around the glowing tree, cheerful yet oblivious to her sudden shift.

“You seem different, honey,” Tom remarked lightly, sipping coffee, mildly amused. Sarah just smiled wider, humming louder, eyes glittering with a secret joy that made him uneasy.

By afternoon, unease bloomed into tension. Sarah’s smiles were too broad, her laughter too sharp. Grandma Mildred watched her carefully, sensing something deeply wrong. She leaned toward Abby, gently touching the child’s shoulder. “Where’s that doll, baby? Where’s Satan Claus?”

Abby glanced around. “I dunno, Grandma. He moves sometimes.”

Before Mildred could respond, carolers arrived at the door, their joyful voices echoing through the frozen landscape. Sarah opened the door warmly, inviting Mrs. Grimsley in. Moments later, as the others sang merrily outside, Sarah led Mrs. Grimsley into the kitchen, still humming that strange melody.

In the dim kitchen, bathed in soft holiday glow, Sarah turned abruptly, gripping a candy cane sharpened to a vicious point. “Silent night,” she whispered, her voice strangely musical. Mrs. Grimsley barely had time to scream before crimson stained the pristine snow outside.

Upstairs, Grandma Mildred felt dread coiling tight within her chest. “Tom, something’s wrong. It’s that doll. It carries something dark. Old stories my mama told…” She paused, eyes shadowed with memory. “Stories about the Christmas Witch.”

Tom laughed weakly, but his amusement vanished as they heard a wet, sickening sound from downstairs, followed by the eerie humming.

Sarah appeared at the staircase, eyes glowing softly red in the festive lights. “Family,” she crooned sweetly, candy cane glistening red. “It’s Christmas. Come celebrate with Mommy.”

Chaos erupted. Ben barricaded the door as Sarah, relentless, joyful in her terror, battered against the wood, singing distorted carols. Abby, clutching Grandma’s hand, realized the truth. “Grandma, the doll. Mommy started acting weird after Satan Claus came!”

They rushed downstairs, heart racing, dodging Sarah’s haunting pursuit. Abby grabbed the grotesque doll from where it sat innocently beneath the tree, eyes glowing faintly. Sarah shrieked, a sound inhuman and full of rage, surging toward her daughter with terrifying speed.

Mildred hurled the doll into the roaring fireplace. Flames engulfed it, sparks spiraling upward like demonic embers. Sarah collapsed, screaming as if torn apart from within. Then, for a moment, the world stilled.

Sarah stirred, eyes clear, tears streaming. “Forgive me,” she whispered brokenly, reaching for Abby. But before their fingers touched, her body shuddered violently, eyes flashing again, possessed by a final desperate surge.

Tom and Ben held her back, hearts breaking as Abby, brave beyond her years, doused her mother with holy water from Grandma Mildred’s trembling hands. Sarah’s anguished screams filled the home, then faded into silence.

Christmas night found the Holloways huddled together, shattered yet closer than ever, healing beneath the gentle glow of the tree. Sarah held Abby close, her touch tender, haunted but human once more.

Outside, unseen beneath fresh snow, small fingers closed around the charred remnants of Satan Claus. A childlike giggle whispered softly through the winter air, unnoticed, drifting into the darkened woods beyond.
