A+E LAB HOSTS THE UK’S FIRST CHOREOGRAPHIC CODING LAB

In July 2022, AΦE was excited to host UK’s first Choreographic Coding Lab (CCL) by Motion Bank at their new A+E Lab in Chatham, UK, for movement hackers and practitioners to gather to discuss and work on projects, ideas and challenges in a peer-to-peer setting.

The CCL by Motion Bank was facilitated by Scott deLahunta, Daniel Bisig from the Motion Bank and Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University, Mark Coniglio (Creator of Isadola), Eni Brander and Nick Rothwell. With a total of 20 participants coming mainly from UK but as well from the USA, France and Germany.

What is CCL?

The CCL format offers unique opportunities of exchange and collaboration for digital media ‘code savvy’ artists who have an interest in translating aspects of choreography and dance into digital form and applying choreographic thinking to their own practice. This format supports working with patterns in movement scores and structures through finding, generating and applying them with results ranging from prototypes for artworks to new plug-ins for working with dance related datasets. The CCLs seek to support a sustainable collaborative practice among its participants, encouraging ongoing exchange in a growing artistic research community.

The CCL format is an outcome of the first phase (2010–2013) of Motion Bank, a research project of The Forsythe Company in Frankfurt focused on the creation of digital dance scores with guest choreographers. Motion Bank is now hosted at the Hochschule Mainz where it continues its dance research and analysis activities, collecting new datasets and developing tools. These datasets and tools will be made available to the CCL. The CCL will be enriched by a selection of input sessions with experienced dance artists as well as members of the Motion Bank team.

“The UK has a thirty-year tradition of bringing dance and new media artists together, which has resulted in a strong legacy of creative partnerships and collaborations. Now, Aoi Nakamura and Esteban Lecoq are carrying on this tradition with the establishment of A+E Lab at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham. Since 2013, the Choreographic Coding Labs (CCLs) — originating with Motion Bank, a project of The Forsythe Company in Frankfurt — has offered a unique creative format focused on providing digital and data artists the opportunity to access dance knowledge and choreographic thinking in new ways. Motion Bank has co-organized CCLs with hosts in cities world-wide, including Melbourne, Belo Horizonte (Brazil), New York, Los Angeles, Berlin and Amsterdam. We are excited to now co-organize the first CCL in the UK with our hosts A+E Lab.”
