Married for 5 Years, a Late-Night Call from My Husband Completely Turned My Life Upside Down
The phone vibrated as I was tidying up my son’s toys. The living room lamp cast a dim, yellowish light. Colorful building blocks and Transformers were scattered on the floor. My son was fast asleep, his steady breathing coming from the bedroom. The door was ajar, and a soft moonlight peeked through a gap in the curtains.
“Hello?” I casually answered the phone, still holding a small red toy car in my other hand.
“Mei, let’s get a divorce,” Wang Qiang’s voice was terrifyingly calm, as if he were asking what we should have for dinner. There wasn’t a hint of hesitation in his tone, as if this decision had been brewing in his mind for a long time.
I thought I misheard him. My husband had always been a gentle person, usually quiet, and diligent at work. We had been married for five years, and besides occasional small disagreements, our life together had been pretty harmonious. He was the typical quiet engineer: dressed simply, spoke modestly, took our son to the park on weekends, and occasionally took me on trips during holidays.
“What did you say?” My hand trembled, and I almost dropped the phone. The little red car clattered onto the carpet with a soft sound.
“I have another woman. She’s pregnant,” Wang Qiang’s voice sounded miles away, as cold as ice. His tone was like he was announcing the most ordinary fact.
In that instant, I felt struck by lightning. The living room lamp flickered, and the scattered blocks on the floor mirrored my shattered heart. The wedding photo on the wall seemed to mock me now. We were in Gulangyu, Xiamen, under a bright sun, beaming with happy smiles. That smile looked so ironic now.
“Who is she?” My voice trembled, sharp with a hint of desperation I couldn’t control.
“The new designer at the company. She’s two months pregnant,” he said it so casually, as if it were a trivial matter. Like he was reviewing a dish or discussing the weather.
Suddenly, I remembered the little clues lately: he often worked late, his phone was always on silent, and there was sometimes a faint, unfamiliar perfume on his clothes. Those details were like daggers, stabbing me in the heart right now. I had asked him many times, but he always brushed me off, saying the project was tight and his boss was pushing him.
“What about our son? Did you even think about him?” I shouted, tears instantly blurring my vision. The scattered toys on the carpet — red, blue, green, yellow — were just like my broken feelings.
“I’ll take responsibility for the child. I’ll pay child support, and we can discuss joint custody,” Wang Qiang’s voice remained calm, as if he were discussing an ordinary business contract. Not a trace of apology, not a moment of hesitation, just like he was talking about the weather or the stock market.
I suddenly realized this man never loved me. Our five years of marriage were just a transaction he meticulously planned. A stable family life, an obedient wife, and a cute son were just supporting characters in the script of his life. All he needed was a perfect facade, a family to maintain his social image.
“Wang Qiang, you’re a real jerk,” I whispered, my voice full of despair and anger.
There was a few seconds of silence from the other end, followed by a light chuckle. “Get some rest early.” It was as if we were just discussing dinner, not a marriage about to end.
The call ended. All that was left in the living room were my son’s toys and my suppressed sobs. The building blocks on the floor, the little red car, the wedding photo on the wall — they all became witnesses to irony and pain.
I knew, from this moment on, my life would change completely.
