Becoming Human (2025, Polen Ly)

หนึ่งในหนังที่ชอบที่สุดในปีนี้ ดูมาหลายเดือนแล้วก็ยังชอบอยู่เวลาคิดถึงหนังก็ยังรู้สึกงดงาม หนังเล่าเรื่องความสัมพันธ์ของหนุ่มช่างภาพกับผีสาวเจ้าที่ในโรงหนังเก่าที่รอวันถูกทุบทิ้ง ไอ้หนุ่มแอบเข้าไปถ่ายรูปแล้วเจอกับหญิงสาวลึกลัยที่ตายนานแล้ว แต่ยังไม่ได้ไปผุดไปเกิด จนเมื่อโรงหนังร้างนี้ถูกทุบเธอก็อาจจะได้ไปเกิดจริงๆ ส่วนตัวเขาอาศัยนอนวัด ทำข่าวการภยายามรื้อไล่วัดเพื่อสร้างอย่างอื่น

มันเลยเป็นความสัมพันธ์ของคนสองคนในโลกที่ไม่มีที่ให้พวกเขาอีก เพราะแผ่นดินเมืองถูกรื้อสร้างใหม่ ขับไสคนจน คนดั้งเดิมออกไป หลังจบสิ้นการอพยพ ฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธุ์ของขเมรแดง ทุนนิยมก็บับไสคนจนออกจากที่อยู่เหมือนกัน(จำไม่ผิดไอเดียนี้มาจากสารคดี Last Night I Saw You Smiling ของKavich Neang หนังใช้นักแสดงชายคนเดียวกันด้วย) เอาเข้าจริงหนังกัมพูชายุคใหม่ ล้วนพูดเรื่องการ gentrified เมือง ตั้งแต่ Daimond Island จนมาถึง Last Night I Saw You Smiling ม White Building ถ้าจำไม่ผิด Dreamland ก็พูดเรื่องนี้

พิเศษสำหรับPolen ที่เราชอบหนังของเขาทุกเรื่องมากๆตั้งแต่หนังสั้น Further and Further Away จนถึง Until The Orhcid Blooms ที่เป็นพาร์ทสารคดีของหนังสั้น ทั้งสองเรื่องพูดถึงหมุ่บ้านที่โดนน้ำท่วมจากเขื่อนแล้วทำให้ชนพื้นเมืองที่เป็นชนกลุ่มน้นอต้องพลัดถิ่นพลัดที่เหมือนกัน หนังยาวแรกของPolen ก็ยังคงอยู่ประเด็นนี้จนคิดว่าจะหาหนังที่พูดถึง ผลของความเจริญ การสร้างเมือง อย่างน้อยต้องมี White Building กับเรื่องนี้เป็นตัวอย่าง ชอบที่หนังเล่าเรื่องครอบครัวบ้านข้่างๆโรงหนังที่ไม่สามารถย้่ายต้นไม่ของพ่อออไกไปตอนย้านบ้านได้ด้วย รากถูกตัดขาด ผู้คนในเมืองระเหระหนกลับบ้านนอกและไม่รู้ว่าจะทำมาหากินอะไรต่อไป

บ้านที่พวกเขาพอจะมีได้ก็คือศาลเจ้าที่ ที่ชายหนุ่มให้วิญญาณของหญิงสาวเข้าไปอาศัยและขี่มอเตอร์ไซค์พาไปเที่ยว มันน่ารักและน่าเศร้าที่บ้านกลายเป็นเพียงการเคลื่อนย้านไม่รู้จบในผ่านดินที่เราไม่ได้เป็นเจ้าของ

ช่วงองก์สามหนังพูดถึงห้วงยามการรอการเกิดใหม่ แถวทางของวิญญาณในอาคารร้่าง และการลืมอดีต ซึ่งก็เป็นแนวพุทธๆ แต่ในทางหนึ่งร่างกายก็คล้ายกับบ้านซึ่งเสื่อมโทรมลงและวิญญาณก็เร่ร่อนออกไปหาบ้านใหม่ การ ‘กลายเป็นมนุษย์’ จึงกลายเป็นเพียงการมีบ้านชั่วครู่ชั่วคราว ชั่วหนึ่งชีวิต

ดูนานแล้วหนังก็เล็กๆบางๆแต่ยังจำหลายอย่างฝังใจติดททอปปีนี้แน่นอน

One of my favorite films of this year.I watched it many months ago, and I still love it. When I think back on the film, it still feels beautiful.

The film tells the story of a relationship between a young photographer and a female guardian spirit in an old cinema that is awaiting demolition.The young man sneaks in to take photographs and encounters a mysterious woman who died long ago but has not yet passed on. Only when this abandoned cinema is demolished might she truly be reincarnated. As for him, he sleeps at a temple and covers the news about the efforts to evict the temple’s residents to build something else.

It becomes a relationship between two people in a world that no longer has a place for them, as the city’s land is being torn down and rebuilt, driving out the poor and the original inhabitants.After the end of the exodus and the Khmer Rouge genocide, capitalism is now displacing the poor from their homes in the same way. (If I recall correctly, this idea comes from the documentary Last Night I Saw You Smiling by Kavich Neang, and the film even uses the same male actor.)

In truth, modern Cambodian cinema is fixated on the gentrification of the city, from Diamond Island to Last Night I Saw You Smiling and White Building. If I’m not mistaken, Dreamland also speaks on this subject.

This is especially true for Polen, whose work I greatly admire, from the short film Further and Further Away to Until The Orchid Blooms, which is the documentary portion of a short. Both films address a village flooded by a dam, causing the indigenous minority to be similarly displaced from their land.Polen’s first feature film remains on this theme, leading me to think that if one were to find films that speak of the consequences of “progress” and urbanization, White Building and this film would be prime examples.

I also loved how the film told the story of the family living next to the cinema, who couldn’t take the father’s tree with them when they moved.The roots are severed. The city’s inhabitants are scattered back to the countryside, uncertain of how they will make a living.

The only home they can seem to have is the spirit house, which the young man invites the woman’s spirit to inhabit, taking her on trips with his motorcycle.It is both lovely and tragic that “home” has become merely an endless displacement in a land we do not own.

The film’s third act speaks of the moment of waiting for rebirth, the spirit’s path within the abandoned building, and the forgetting of the past, which is all very Buddhist in nature.But in another way, the body is also like a house that deteriorates, and the spirit wanders out to find a new one “Becoming human” then, is merely the act of having a temporary home, just for a single lifetime.
