I always made sure no one felt left out — until I realized I was the one being left out

I spent my entire life making sure nobody felt left out. I would check if everyone was okay, wait for the person who was always behind, and make sure no one had to walk alone. I became the kind of person who would slow down just so someone could catch up, wait a little longer so we could go together, and make room for people even when no one thought to make room for me. Funny thing is, I became so used to making sure nobody was left behind that I never noticed how often I was the one being left behind.
I was always the one waiting. If they were late, I waited. If they needed someone to walk with, I stayed. If they were alone, I made sure they had someone. Sometimes, even when I wanted to go ahead, I still waited because I didn’t want anyone to feel the way I knew it felt to be left behind. But when it was my turn to be left behind, I stopped expecting anyone to come back. Somehow, I already knew they wouldn’t wait for me.
I was so busy making sure everyone had a place that I forgot to ask myself, “Do I have a place here too?” I was always there for people, but when I needed someone, I learned how quiet things could get. I would listen to everyone’s problems, but sometimes I had no one to tell mine to. I would remember the little things about people, while quietly wondering if anyone even remembered the little things about me.
Whenever I felt left out, I would tell myself,
“It’s okay. Maybe they’re just busy.”
“It’s okay. Don’t overthink it.”
“It’s okay. At least they’re happy.”
I kept making excuses for people because I didn’t want to believe that maybe, just maybe, I wasn’t as important to them as they were to me.
And that’s the part that hurts — not being alone, but realizing that you can be surrounded by people and still feel alone. You can be in the group chat and still feel like nobody would notice if you stopped replying. You can sit with everyone and still feel like you’re not really there. You can care about people deeply and still wonder if they would care enough to notice when you slowly disappear.
Maybe that’s why some of us became so good at making other people feel seen. Because we know exactly what it feels like to be invisible. We know what it’s like to wait for someone to ask, “Are you okay?” We know what it’s like to wish someone would notice without having to ask. So we became that person for everyone else the one who checks in, the one who stays, the one who understands, the one who says, “It’s okay, I’m here.”
But sometimes, the person who is always there for everyone else is secretly hoping that someone will finally be there for them too. Maybe that’s what I’ve been waiting for all this time. Not to be everyone’s favorite person. Not to be included in everything. Just to feel like someone would notice if I wasn’t there. To feel chosen without having to ask, remembered without reminding people, and wanted without having to earn it.
Because I finally understand something I don’t have to keep giving pieces of myself just to make sure I have a place in someone’s life. The right people won’t make me beg for a seat at the table. I shouldn’t have to disappear from a room just to realize I deserved to be there all along.
Maybe I’ve spent too much time making sure nobody felt left out. Maybe it’s time I start making sure I don’t leave myself out anymore. Because I deserve the same kindness, patience, and effort I’ve always given to everyone else.
And honestly, maybe that’s the part I’ve been forgetting the whole time.
“Do I really feel left out, or was I never part of it in the first place?”
Maybe that question is harder to answer than I thought. Because sometimes, the truth isn’t that people are intentionally leaving you behind. Maybe you were just so busy trying to keep up, trying to fit in, and trying to make everyone feel comfortable that you never stopped to ask whether you actually felt comfortable there too.
And maybe that’s when everything started to make sense. I wasn’t asking for too much. I was just asking the wrong people to give me something they were never willing to give.
