The Box in the Attic

(Apologies for being inactive recently, my husband has been seriously ill in the hospital, but is home now).

The sky split with lightning, the kind that rattles windows and nerves. Clara sat in the attic, surrounded by relics of her childhood; bouncing balls, bubble wands, and a box labelled “bones.” She used to say they were dinosaur bones. Her brother had laughed, until he went missing. No one ever found him.

Now, twenty years later, she opened the box. Not plastic. Not playthings. Real. Small. Human.

She remembered the argument. The push. The silence.

Lightning struck again.

Downstairs, her daughter called, “Mummy, can I play with the old toys?”

Clara whispered, “Only if you promise not to scream.”
