Queens Park Rangers Summer Recruitment Plan 2026

Back again for a second summer recruitment plan and hopefully better than last year’s edition. 2025/26 was an interesting year for QPR with streaks of both exciting and concerning form but my general feeling around Rangers is one of optimism going into next year. With a number of exciting young players going into their second or third seasons at championship level, I genuinely believe that, with a few smart additions, this QPR side can make a push towards the top 10 and maybe even the top 8 next season. This is a very long read so I don’t expect anyone to read the whole thing but all feedback would be very much appreciated.

Current Makeup of the Squad

For the first time in a while, despite the squad still needing a few key additions, I think QPR will go into the summer with a relatively healthy looking squad. Below is what we know will happen going into the summer in terms of outgoings and players returning from loan:

Outgoings:

With the incomings and outgoings from above, the chart below shows the squad which QPR will begin the summer with (lined up in Stephan’s 442):

Outgoings

QPR are in a position where we’ve got a fair bit of dead wood to get rid of in the summer as well as a need to raise some funds from a few sales. There’s also a number of young players who I think would hugely benefit from a year out on loan next season. That being said, below is a list of departures which I think are likely and/or I would look to make:

• Esquerdinha – Loan (League One/Two)
• Emmerson Sutton – Loan (League Two/National League)
• Daniel Bennie – Loan (League One)

Zan Celar and Hevertton Santos have unfortunately been duds for us and neither have overly impressed on loan either so I think it’s a case where you just take whatever you can get for those two in the summer.

Alfie Lloyd seems like such a great guy but I do have my doubts as to whether he is championship level or not. He hasn’t been overly impressive this year on loan although, he was playing at two clubs where minutes would have been difficult to find in Leyton Orient (behind League One player of the season Dom Ballard) and at the title winners Lincoln City. However, if the plan is to loan out Obikwu, I would look to keep Lloyd around.

At the end of last season, I believed that Jonathan Varane would become a 10 million pound player but he unfortunately hasn’t progressed as much as we all had hoped or thought this season. Despite that, I don’t think Varane has been as bad as some have made him out to be and therefore I think that there will still be a market for him in the price range of the bids we received for him in the last two windows, so now is probably a good time to sell and get the trading model going.

Joe Walsh really struggled at points this season but I think he has shown glimpses of promise. He unfortunately has had to be learning on the job for us whilst Murphy Cooper was getting minutes out on loan. Next year, I’d look to get Joe Walsh 40+ games in League One and keep Murphy Cooper around as our number two goalkeeper.

Kealey Adamson has massively struggled for minutes this season and I think many forget that he isn’t a kid, he is 23 years old. He’s a good athlete but his tactical understanding and technical ability isn’t Championship level. A loan move to help try and develop those qualities or help him gain some value ahead of a potential sale in summer 2027 would be the best move for all parties in my opinion.

Tylon Smith is one of the best prospects coming out of the development squad at the moment and I think a loan move to a possession based League Two side would be very beneficial for him. I would look to keep either him or Akindileni around as that 5th/6th choice centre back next season and with the respective ages of the two and Akindileni spending half the season on loan at Morecambe, I think Smith is more in need of the first-team minutes.

Esquerdinha is another young player who has shown some promising glimpses but has also been tasked with defending some of the league’s best wide players and looked out of his depth at times. An EFL loan to really sure up the defensive side of his game would be very beneficial for him.

Emmerson Sutton’s loans weren’t a massive success for him this season. With limited minutes at Harrogate and being played out of position frequently at Morecambe I think he should go out on loan for another year.

Bennie was one who was linked with a League One loan move in January but had to stick around due to injuries. Therefore, a loan move should definitely be on the cards for him this summer in my opinion.

The club should also be prepared for bids for the likes of Kone and Burrell. However, despite the rumours, I’m not too sure clubs will be willing to pay what we will be asking for and therefore those two will be unlikely to depart. In Kone’s instance because his value will likely increase even more with another year in championship where he could really explode so it’s probably in the club’s best interests to keep him around for at least another season. In Burrell’s instance because of the injuries he’s faced this season which looks to have reoccurred with him having to come off injured against Derby. Despite Burrell being the one linked with a move away, I think (if either leave this summer) it is more likely to be Richard Kone.

Kieran Morgan is one who I think would seriously benefit from playing 40+ games at the top end of League One. However, this would only be possible if the club were to recruit well enough in midfield to be able to sanction the loan and it could also be argued that Morgan may be past that stage in his development now with him having already made just shy of 60 appearances at championship level.

It would also be ideal for the club to sanction loan spells for some of the better performing development squad players too. Jaylan Pearman has seriously impressed in the DS since arriving from Perth Glory last summer, seeming a cut above the level and ready for an EFL or National League loan. Isak Alemayehu made his debut against Ipswich with a short but relatively impressive cameo so he could be another who might benefit from an EFL loan although I can see a world in which he is kept around and can add some value to this squad next season. Those two aside, the club should continue to sanction those short lower non-league loans for some of the younger members of the development squad.

That being said, if the outgoings listed from above were to happen, below is how the QPR squad would look (again lined up in Julien Stephan’s 442):

Profiles to target

When making this recruitment plan, I made sure to try and keep it in line with the clubs transfer policy and trading model. QPR’s transfer policy, as we all know by now, is signing young players who could have potential resale value in the future and have room to be developed. This idea was also reinforced by chairman Lee Hoos’ interview which was put out on club socials in March where he re-emphasised the club’s methodology when it comes to recruitment and stressed the importance of “sticking to the plan”. Moreover, Christian Nourry’s stance around Loans is quite a clear one and, with our only loanee last season being Norrington-Davis, I have tried to make all recommended signings permanent transfers bar one or two exceptions.

With that in mind, below is a list of profiles I think QPR should look to target this summer:

• A new #1 Goalkeeper
• A Starting Left Back
• A Right Back to compete with Mbengue
• A Ball-Winning Midfielder
• An All Action, Box to Box Midfielder

For each of these roles, I compiled long lists of over 30 players across the EFL and Europe throughout the season before narrowing them down to my top three recommendations and a further five honourable mentions per position.

Goalkeepers

QPR quite comfortably had the worst set of Goalkeepers in the division last season. The level of shot stopping among the three was poor with Walsh underperforming is xGOT by -7.8, Nardi by -2.1 and Hamer by -0.5. However, it wasn’t just the shot-stopping department where these goalkeepers struggled, they were also poor at commanding their box which has cost us a few goals this season but won’t come under these numbers (Paul Nardi the prime suspect here). When recruiting a new goalkeeper, good shot-stopping has to be biggest the priority but I’d also be looking for a keeper with strong box presence and then (if possible) good distribution too. It’s hard to find a goalkeeper strong in all three of these areas on our budget but if you can prioritise getting a good shot-stopper who is capable at dealing with crosses I think the club will have done well (even if the distribution isn’t incredible).

• Age: 24

Sam Tickle has been one of if not the best goalkeeper in league one for a number of seasons now and his step up to the championship seems inevitable. The former England youth international is willing to leave his goal line and act as a sweeper when needed. At 6ft 2, I wouldn’t describe Tickle as a goalkeeper who can completely dominate his box but he is more than comfortable dealing with crosses into the box and is good in this aspect. Most importantly, Tickle is an excellent shot-stopper having prevented 2.73 goals for Wigan this season and producing some outstanding saves. His general distribution is fine, he is capable of playing out from the back although he can be slightly suspect of slicing a long ball into the stands at times. However, Tickle actually has a really impressive sidewinder drop kick on him and has managed to get two assists from it in league one this season.

Jari De Busser

• Age: 26
• Club: Go Ahead Eagles
• Contract Expires: 2027
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Jari De Busser has had an excellent season for Go Ahead Eagles and, with him only having one year left on his contract, this could be a great time to buy. The Belgian is quite simply an incredible shot-stopper boasting an extremely impressive 8.76 goals prevented in the Eredivise last season. He has strong footwork and a good stance which allows him to react quickly and make good reflex saves. However, despite being 6ft 3, his box presence isn’t incredible. He does leave his line relatively frequently to try and deal with the cross but he often chooses to punch rather than claiming the ball and at times can flap at it. Similarly to Tickle, De Busser’s distribution from short passing and buildup is fine but, when he wants to go direct, his long balls can be quite inconsistent.

Beau Reus

• Age: 24
• Club: SK Beveren
• Contract Expires: 2026
• Transfer Type: Permanent (Free Transfer)

Beau Reus is very much the left field choice of the three but (with Reus available on a free transfer) he could potentially be the best value of them all. Reus is coming off the back of an impressive individual and collective season with SK Beveren where they were completely dominant and won the Belgian second division with an unbeaten record. Reus’ shot stopping isn’t quite as impressive numbers wise as the previous two (-0.92 goals prevented) but it’s important to contextualise those numbers with his team’s dominance. Therefore, although he probably isn’t as prolific a shot-stopper as Tickle or De Busser, he is still a good one and far better than the options QPR had last season. However, Reus more than makes up for this in his box dominance. Standing at 6ft 6 Reus is capable of dominating the box and has often been seen going out and claiming crosses relieving the pressure on his team. Reus is comfortable with the ball at his feet and his distribution is generally quite impressive too whether it be either hitting long balls or playing out from the back.

Left Backs

If we have any aspirations of a playoff push next season, we really can’t go into next season with Ziyad Larkeche as our starting Left-Back. Fortunately, with West London Sport reporting that we are targeting a new left back this summer, that looks like that is unlikely to be the case. Norrington-Davis came in and did the job required but I personally wouldn’t make this one a permanent deal. This summer, I would be looking for a more technical left back who offers more going forwards (especially if we go into next season with Mbengue as our preferred Right Back) and of course is a good defender going the other way.

• Age: 24
• Club: Oxford United
• Contract Expires: ? (Signed a “Long-Term Contract” in 2024)

For me, Jack Currie is one of the most obvious signings which we can make this summer. A player in a position of need whose club has just been relegated but still performed as a top eight level Left Back in the championship last season. Moreover, not only do I think Currie’s style of play would translate to this Rangers team very well, but also he is a massive QPR fan and is a former season ticket holder at Loftus Road. Currie is a player with a good athleticism and an engine and can get up and down the left flank. Being good at defending one on one and impressive at defending the back post, Currie is excellent defensively but he also adds value going the other way. Currie is particularly strong when carrying the ball forwards and, through his smart usage of both underlapping and overlapping runs, he often finds himself in good areas to cut the ball back and has had relative success in this aspect. However, his deep crossing can be inconsistent at times and, although it isn’t necessarily bad at all, I wouldn’t have it down as one of his strengths.

Harry Amass

• Age: 19
• Club: Manchester United
• Contract Expires: 2027
• Transfer Type: Loan/Permanent

Amass is a player who Rangers have already been credited with interest in as per West London Sport and it’s no surprise why he’ll be on ours amongst most of the other clubs in the championship’s radars. Amass was performing as one of if not the best Left Back in the division in the first half of last season despite playing for what was an abysmal Sheffield Wednesday side. Due to his age and potential, a loan deal seems more likely for Amass this summer as I’m not too sure Manchester United would want to let him go at this stage in his career. However, If United aren’t willing to extend his contract, a permanent deal might actually be possible with Amass’ contract set to expire next summer. Amass is a very technically sound fullback with his stand out trait arguably being his highly impressive close control and dribbling. He is capable of producing a good variety of end product whether it be deep crosses or cutbacks and could really add another dynamic to this Rangers team both in buildup and in the final 1/3. Amass is also sound defensively being a good one on one defender. He also has the desirable trait of being quite aggressive and snappy in the tackle. The biggest concern with the signing would be that he is off the back of a pretty bad injury which rules him out of his entire loan spell at Norwich. However, this would be a risk that is more than worth taking in my opinion due to the calibre of player. Another small thing worth acknowledging with Amass is that he will likely be needed for Manchester United’s pre season fixtures meaning a potential deal would probably happen towards the end of the window.

Ismael Boura

• Age: 26
• Club: Troyes
• Contract Expires: 2027
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Although he is a bit older than the previous two options and perhaps isn’t the ideal age to fit QPR’s transfer policy, Boura is a technically gifted full back who ranks particularly well on the data aspect. There’s a lot to like about Boura both technically and tactically. Tactically, he is able to invert well and take up great positions inside whilst also showcasing some great underlapping and overlapping runs. Technically Boura is very impressive and has tendencies to play smart passes in buildup, with Boura finding relative success at channel balls in behind. He also is good in the final 1/3 with a nice range of crosses and cutbacks in his locker. Boura is sound defensively too, being combative in the air and strong in duels as well as having good recovery pace.

Right Backs

In my opinion, Rangers should be looking for another right back to not only compete with Mbengue but also to start in certain games. Mbengue is a great character to have around but his flaws and strengths are clear for all to see. He is a good 1v1 defender and has impressive physical traits such as his pace but he is not technically sound and can be rash at times. With that in mind, I would be looking to sign a more technically gifted right back to compete alongside Mbengue this summer who is ideally tidier on the ball and provides more in the final third.

Zak Swanson

• Age: 25

Similarly to Currie, Swanson is another player who I think would be a very obvious signing for us to make this summer. Swanson will be available for free this summer, was loosely linked to QPR last summer and, although he is predominantly a right back, is capable of covering at left back too. Moreover, being as technically sound as Swanson is, he offers a perfect profile to complement Mbengue whilst already having championship experience and being available for nothing. Having come through the ranks at Arsenal’s academy, Swanson is good on the ball and played that inverted fullback role at Portsmouth quite well. Defensively, Swanson is a good one on one defender as well as being competitive in the air. However, he is susceptible to switching off at times and his back post defending could definitely be better.

Hampus Skoglund

• Age: 22
• Club: Hammarby
• Contract Expires: 2029
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Skoglund is an example of a typical modern day fullback. He has the engine to get up and down the right flank whilst being good offensively and solid defensively. Skoglund particularly excels when carrying the ball and is an excellent dribbler although this strength can sometimes lead to him taking some unnecessary risks in buildup. The Swedish u21 international also has impressive distribution both in his variation of final third deliveries and when playing out from the back in buildup. Defensively, Skoglund is a solid 1v1 defender but sometimes he can be caught out from a ball in behind him as he isn’t always perfectly aware or concentrated. However, being just 22, Skoglund has all the fundamentals to be easily developed into a top full back at this level.

Nolan Galves

• Age: 22
• Club: Rodez
• Contract Expires: 2027
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Although Galves probably isn’t as complete a fullback as either Skoglund or Swanson, Galves particularly excels in areas which are more a priority for Rangers when recruiting a right back this summer. More specifically, Galves has had excellent final third output this season with 6 assists, 41 chances created and 6 big chances created. Galves is a highly impressive crosser of the ball both from open play and from set pieces whilst also having a good variety of deliveries in his locker. Having made 52 successful crosses last season, Galves is a player who loves to get round on the overlap and put a ball into the box which could really suit Rangers with our use of more inverted wingers last season. Going the other way, there is certainly room for improvement although he’s not at all bad defensively and is a capable 1v1 defender. He is however quite poor in the air leading to his back post defending being quite inconsistent at times. That being said, with Galves being 22 and only having one year left on his deal, this could be a good market opportunity for QPR to pick up as he would immediately improve us going forwards and has age on his side to be developed going the other way.

Ball Winning Midfielders

If the (what seems likely) departure of Jonathan Varane was to happen this summer, the club should be in for a new ball winning midfielder this window. With Hayden’s departure also now confirmed coupled with question marks over Sam Field’s future at QPR there perhaps could be a need for two. Rangers should be looking for a physical presence in midfield with good athleticism and importantly strong ball winning capabilities but also someone who can play a bit.

Etienne Camara

• Age: 23
• Club: Sporting Charleroi
• Contract Expires: 2027
• Transfer Type: Permanent

With just one year left on his contract, Etienne Camara could be a perfect signing for this role. Camara is an excellent ball winner, tidy on the ball and the fact he is left footed could bring some extra balance into what is a very right footed set of midfielders currently at QPR. Standing at 6ft 3, Camara has a large frame which he absolutely uses to his benefit whether it be using his long legs to win the ball or using his frame to shield the ball. Camara is calm with the ball under pressure boasting impressive press resistance qualities as shown by his very high successful dribble %. Furthermore, despite being just 23, Camara actually does have some sort of championship experience under his belt already, making 23 appearances for Huddersfield between 2021 and 2023 before being picked up by Udinese and eventually Sporting Charleroi.

Melayro Bogarde

• Age: 23
• Club: LASK
• Contract Expires: 2028
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Melayro Bogarde percentile ranking vs other midfielders

Bogarde is probably a more well rounded midfielder than Camara but is equally impressive in his defensive output. Bogarde is capable of progressing the ball nicely but is generally efficient in possession and doesn’t give the ball away often. He offers the same physical presence in midfield as well as the athleticism to get around the pitch. Unsurprisingly, Bogarde is an excellent ball winner but also boasts a strong tactical understanding which helps him read the game well and only further improves his defensive output. The former Netherlands u21 international also provides good levels of versatility, being able to play at right back and at centre back which are two areas where cover would certainly be welcomed at Rangers this summer.

Gibson Yah

• Age: 22
• Club: FC Volendam
• Contract Expires: 2027 (Club one year option)
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Standing at 6ft 4, Gibson Yah is a bit of a physical monster in the midfield and is a brilliant destroyer type midfielder. His defensive output is elite and he puts those long legs to use when tackling or intercepting the ball but also in his long strides. To add to his height and frame, Yah is actually relatively quick and has impressive athleticism too. In terms of his on the ball ability, Yah is comfortable receiving the ball on the half turn, good vision and has quite a nice long ping on him. Yah’s press resistant is solid with him being able to use his frame to his advantage whilst also having quite quick feet for a man of his stature. With effectively two years left on his contract, this could be a good time for Rangers to acquire what is quite a rare but desirable combination of physical and technical profiles which I am fairly confident will translate well to the championship.

Box to Box Midfielders

Nico Madsen was sensational last season and was clearly our most important player in 25/26 which ultimately led to him perhaps getting overplayed and in turn resulted in his injury against Southampton. An all action midfielder who could provide Madsen with support or perhaps even play alongside him would be very beneficial for Rangers this summer. In this area, I’ve looked for midfielders who are comfortable on the ball and have good ball progression whilst also ensuring that they are capable of helping out defensively too. Furthermore, it is important for this type of midfielder to have high energy and a good engine to cover ground in what is usually a two man QPR midfield.

Enzo Leopold

• Age: 25
• Club: Hannover 96
• Contract Expires: 2026

Leopold would perhaps be a quite ambitious free transfer for Rangers but a very good one nevertheless. On the ball, Leopold is so impressive. He is capable of dictating the play, has incredible vision and a good eye for a pass. Importantly, Leopold is progressive on the ball and does look to play forwards when possible which, Madsen aside, QPR’s midfield has lacked on a consistent basis over the past few seasons. Leopold has lots of energy too, having a good engine to get up and down the pitch and impacts play in all thirds of the pitch. Defensively, there are fair questions to be asked about his physicality when he can be quite weak in duels. However, Leopold’s match IQ and how he reads the game can make up for this as he is good at breaking up play through interceptions more so than tackles or physical battles.

Archie Collins

• Age: 26
• Club: Peterborough United
• Contract Expires: 2026
• Transfer Type: Permanent (Free Transfer)

Having already signed Kwame Poku, Ronnie Edwards (on loan and then permanently) and nearly signing Josh Knight, QPR were clearly big fans of that extremely talented Peterborough team from a few years back that somehow didn’t let promoted out of league one. Archie Collins could be the next one to make the step up with Collins (like Poku) running his contract down and looks set to get a championship move on a free transfer this summer. Collins is an energetic midfielder who will bring quality on the ball to this Rangers midfield but is also capable of doing the dirty work too. Being on a free transfer, Collins could be an excellent market opportunity for QPR as, at 26 years of age, he will be entering the peak years of his career and will be instantly ready to make an impact in W12.

Charlie Webster

• Age: 22
• Club: Burton Albion
• Contract Expires: 2027
• Transfer Type: Permanent

Burrell was quite an under the radar signing from Burton last season but has had a tremendous first season in the championship and I think Webster could be the next one out of Burton to do the same. There’s so much upside with this signing due to Webster’s young age (22), Cobham academy upbringing and the fact you could probably get him for relatively cheap given his contract status (contract expires in 2027). As a player, Webster is everything you’d want in an all action midfielder: he brings goals from midfield, is decent on the ball but loves doing the dirty side of the game and has a good engine on him too. My only concern with this signing would be that an ankle injury kept Webster out for a large part of the league one campaign last season (November 2025 – March 2026). However, given the likely price and potential upside, this would be a risk definitely worth taking for Rangers in my opinion.

Conclusion

In a completely hypothetical scenario where Rangers do sign the players in the stated positions from my recommendations, below would show an image of what QPR’s squad depth could look like with the following new signings:

The list above shows a 27 man squad with at least two players being available for each position. The average age of this squad would be low which, although is debatable as to whether it is a good thing or not, is in line with the clubs model. If this was to be the squad going into next season, I would feel confident that Rangers would have enough quality and sufficient depth in order to achieve our goals and objectives in the championship next season. If the club can improve on the availability front next season and address the key areas in goal, at fullback and in midfield, there is no reason why QPR shouldn’t be aiming to push into the top 10 and maybe even the newly extended top 8 playoff places.
