The result is all the more impressive given how the race unfolded, with Russell’s win owing as much to shrewd pit wall strategy as to the speed of the Silver Arrow.

Ferrari’s Brilliant Start, and the Strategy That Got Away

Charles Leclerc announced himself in spectacular fashion with a stunning opening lap that catapulted him to the front of the field. For several laps, the Ferrari looked every bit the rocket ship it had appeared to be in pre-season testing, and a thrilling cat-and-mouse battle developed between Leclerc and Russell that had the Tifosi daring to dream.

The turning point came on lap 11, when Isaac Hadjar was forced to retire with a hydraulic failure, triggering a safety car period. Ferrari, perhaps sensing an opportunity to maintain track position, opted against pitting either of their drivers, a call that would prove costly. Mercedes seized the moment, bringing both Russell and Antonelli in for fresh tyres. Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth, was candid in his assessment, suggesting that pitting at least one of the Ferrari drivers could have changed the complexion of the race entirely.

When the virtual safety car was then deployed again around lap 18, another ideal pit window opened, but Ferrari’s timing left them unable to react.

Charles Leclerc salvaged third place, while Hamilton came home fourth. Ferrari will take significant points from the weekend, but the strategic missteps will sting, and lessons must be learned quickly if the Scuderia are to mount a serious title challenge.

Verstappen Fights Through the Field

Max Verstappen endured a difficult start but showcased his trademark racecraft with a ferocious charge through the pack, gaining an impressive 14 positions by lap 14 to work his way back into contention. However, the Red Bull was unable to convert that momentum into a podium, and a retirement for teammate Isack Hadjar early in the race left Red Bull with a difficult afternoon in terms of constructors’ points, a scenario they will be eager to avoid repeating.

Eighteen-year-old Arvid Lindblad turned heads with an assured performance on his grand prix debut, bringing his Racing Bulls car home in eighth place and securing valuable points for the team. Meanwhile, Lando Norris salvaged fifth for McLaren after a frustrating day, his teammate Oscar Piastri retired during the race, leaving Norris to carry the orange flag alone.

It is, of course, far too early to draw firm conclusions from a single race, but the signs are encouraging for Mercedes and concerning for Red Bull, who will need both cars scoring consistently if they are to defend their constructors’ title.
