๐Ÿ“š How Do Plurals Work in English? (Grade 6 ESL)

Have you ever wondered how to make a word mean โ€œmore than oneโ€ in English? Thatโ€™s what plurals are for! Most of the time, we just add an โ€œsโ€ at the end of a word. For example, cat becomes cats. Easy, right?

But English is full of surprises! Some words follow special rules to become plural. Letโ€™s look at the main ways to form plurals in English.

๐ŸŒŸ 1. Most Nouns: Just Add -s

This is the easiest rule. Just add s to the end.

  • apple โ†’ apples
  • boy โ†’ boys
  • cat โ†’ cats

๐ŸŒŸ 2. Nouns Ending in ch, sh, s, or x: Add -es

If a word ends in ch, sh, s, or x, you add es.

  • brush โ†’ brushes
  • box โ†’ boxes
  • bus โ†’ buses

๐ŸŒŸ 3. Nouns Ending in a Consonant + y: Change y to ies

If a word ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add es.

  • fly โ†’ flies
  • city โ†’ cities

๐ŸŒŸ 4. Nouns Ending in o, a, or a Vowel + y: Just Add s

Some words ending in o or vowels just need an s.

  • piano โ†’ pianos
  • igloo โ†’ igloos
  • umbrella โ†’ umbrellas

๐ŸŒŸ 5. Some Words Ending in o : Add es

Some tricky words ending in o need es.

  • potato โ†’ potatoes
  • tomato โ†’ tomatoes
  • echo โ†’ echoes

๐ŸŒŸ 6. Nouns Ending in f or fe : Change to ves

Some words ending in f or fe change to ves.

  • half โ†’ halves
  • knife โ†’ knives
  • scarf โ†’ scarves

BUT: Some just add s!

  • belief โ†’ beliefs
  • chief โ†’ chiefs

๐ŸŒŸ 7. Irregular Nouns: Totally Different!

Some plurals donโ€™t follow any rules โ€” they are irregular.

  • child โ†’ children
  • man โ†’ men
  • woman โ†’ women
  • tooth โ†’ teeth
  • mouse โ†’ mice
  • fish โ†’ fish
