📚 How Do Plurals Work in English? (Grade 6 ESL)

Have you ever wondered how to make a word mean “more than one” in English? That’s what plurals are for! Most of the time, we just add an “s” at the end of a word. For example, cat becomes cats. Easy, right?

But English is full of surprises! Some words follow special rules to become plural. Let’s look at the main ways to form plurals in English.

🌟 1. Most Nouns: Just Add -s

This is the easiest rule. Just add s to the end.

• apple → apples
• boy → boys
• cat → cats

🌟 2. Nouns Ending in ch, sh, s, or x: Add -es

If a word ends in ch, sh, s, or x, you add es.

• brush → brushes
• box → boxes
• bus → buses

🌟 3. Nouns Ending in a Consonant + y: Change y to ies

If a word ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add es.

• fly → flies
• city → cities

🌟 4. Nouns Ending in o, a, or a Vowel + y: Just Add s

Some words ending in o or vowels just need an s.

• piano → pianos
• igloo → igloos
• umbrella → umbrellas

Some tricky words ending in o need es.

• tomato → tomatoes

Some words ending in f or fe change to ves.

BUT: Some just add s!

Some plurals don’t follow any rules — they are irregular.
