6 Phases of a Relationship

Because love is not just about love — it’s about everything in between.

Love is not only about love. It’s about hatred too.

Hate in love? Yes…

That’s what makes it more exciting. Love is beautiful until you see the dark side of it…

But I will say it’s still beautiful.

Rain can’t pour without dark clouds. Sunrise can’t happen before sunset.

Just like that, the dark side, the pain, is necessary in a relationship.

You love, you hate, you cling, you lust, you feel joy, you feel sorrow — all the emotions with the same person. It’s not possible to experience all these feelings with the same person without loving them.

Love is like a wholesome package. Every single feeling is in it. You feel the safety of a father with him, the care of a mother with her, fights like siblings, gossip like best friends, support like family, and lots of love.

Transparency lives in a relationship.

Trust, loyalty, honesty, and respect are the four pillars of a relationship, and love — that holds it together.

Relationships without these are hollow. And now it’s up to you to decide how to make them strong. Well, not all at once, but through the stages of a relationship, by building them slowly.

You think you know everything about your partner by the second stage only… but that’s not true. You will see each other’s true selves through the passing stages. When you both start accepting all sides of each other, when you both communicate, when you both understand one another, when you both are willing to take responsibility, when you both are ready to accept your faults, when you both can fight against all odds, when you both stand up for each other, and when you both are okay with each other’s jealous side — healthy jealousy — that is when you truly start knowing each other… like no one else does.

There is a saying — “Only a partner can love you the way you are.” And that’s true. (Asking someone to change bad habits is not wrong.)

As the stages pass, a relationship changes its nature like changing seasons. And just like the way you love every season, it should be the same in a relationship too. Love never changes with changing stages; it only grows stronger.

Yeah, problems arise, but you love the rain while knowing it can cause damage if it’s too much. You love winter while hating the extra layers of clothes. You love summer while hating the unbearable heat.

Did your love for the seasons ever change?

These are just opportunities to make your love even stronger.

Let me give you the details.

Here are the 6 stages of a relationship that bring the deepest understanding…

Phase 1 — Honeymoon Phase

Feels like you’re living in a fairytale world? Like everything is just annoyingly perfect.

A dream world… a prince charming or a princess… saving you from all your chaos.

It just feels different. You now literally have someone with whom you can talk about almost everything, pour your heart out, lean on, say anything to, and finally someone who won’t get mad for it.

Every day, everything, just feels a little more perfect.

A red rose in the middle of a garden full of black roses… A white lotus among pink ones… A shining star among the shiningless…

The love, peace, and spark they give feels a little different every single time you talk to them or think about them…

They are just one person out of everyone… yet you see no one but them… everywhere, even when they are not around.

Yes, it’s true.

You see them everywhere.

I used to think it only happened in movies. It felt too filmy, too unreal, until it was my turn.

You start seeing them in every person — not exactly the way movies show it, but almost. You get confused for a second or maybe for 5 seconds, and then you realize… it’s someone else.

People start looking like them — not because they actually do, but because your mind imagines them everywhere.

I saw him… in many people… in my cousins, in strangers…

I would stare at them in shock.

“Is he really here… how?”

My thoughts were louder than reality.

And the people I stared at were probably confused now…

It’s kind of funny until you blush at the thought of seeing them everywhere.

Few years back, I wanted nothing more than to marry him… and if I had let my intrusive thoughts win at that time, I would probably be married now.

The honeymoon phase never gets old. The more you recall it, the more you desire it.

I talked to him for 5 hours a day… sometimes less, sometimes much more. I just couldn’t stop listening to his voice, his laugh, his giggle at my silly things. It was something I had never experienced with anyone else.

I talked to him about almost everything… even my family gossip.

And there wasn’t a single moment where he judged me.

I heard that women become naive around the man they love, and men become babies around the woman they love.

In this stage, we are all ready to give everything just to see them smile.

Everything just feels like —

“Pehli dafa aankhon se hain yeh nindein kafhaan, ke tere or chal pada dil ka yeh raasta.” (For the first time, sleep has left my eyes, and my heart has found its way to you.)

And then comes the part of lust — for them, and only them.

This is normal and important.

It is a step toward becoming even closer… physically and mentally.

And when I say important, I mean this step is necessary, but dependency on it is not.

Intimacy never truly ends, even in long-distance relationships. Yeah, it craves more in long distance, but not in the same way as living together.

The excitement… The increasing heartbeat… The nervousness…

Everything hits perfectly, in every manner.

Phase 2 — Comfort

After your honeymoon phase… the fairytale slowly softens into something quieter. Something deeper. Something real.

You start getting comfortable with your partner.

Some may think comfort comes during the honeymoon phase when you are clingy, always sticking to them, or after intimacy… yeah, but not really.

In the honeymoon phase, you both knew each other’s good sides. You only see the great things in them. You think you are comfortable, but you are not really ready to share your bad sides… because you think they will judge you.

Comfort comes when you start sharing your dark sides as well. Not after, not before, but during that process.

You do share parts of your dark side so they can truly know you… and you become comfortable after that because they didn’t reject you. They didn’t judge you. They just saw you…the real you.

When you both get comfortable, you start seeing each other’s flaws, but they are often overlooked because you are so in love…

And that’s how the relationship becomes less awkward and more comforting.

A place where you can say anything… literally anything… because you know they won’t judge you.

And comfort comes where even the fear of judgment doesn’t exist.

In this phase, it feels like you want nothing else but to wait for time to pass so you can marry them and stay with them forever.

Always together.

This is when you start naming your future kids and planning your future together. Kinda funny.

You finally have someone you can rely on. Finally, someone you can trust completely.

This phase builds trust even stronger.

Phase 3 — Real Faces

Love is still there. The comfort is still there. But now you begin seeing things you never noticed before.

“Real Faces” sounds too dramatic, but I tried to give the names on my own.

Real faces doesn’t mean they suddenly show you their “real face” — maybe a toxic side or something completely different.

Yes, that can happen too, and if someone is fake, leave them as soon as possible. That is an unhealthy relationship.

I am talking about healthy relationships.

A phase where you start feeling like they have changed… or they behave differently… or simply don’t treat you the way they used to.

Maybe you feel like something has shifted in the relationship.

It can feel like the biggest shift of all.

You think your biggest nightmare is coming true.

The hurt version of you becomes confused by something that isn’t the complete truth.

The shifts you are seeing in your relationship were always there…

It only feels like a shift because you started paying attention to it.

Many people show more of their true selves after becoming comfortable.

It could be rudeness, impatience, stubbornness… anything.

But the difference is whether your person takes responsibility for their behavior and is willing to become a better version of themselves for the relationship.

Those are the real ones.

You will see their effort to improve through their actions.

Comfort allows people to be themselves naturally, without the fear of being judged.

So they show more of who they are.

That’s their psychology.

And yours?

Yours is what you feel because of their behavior.

Never ignore your feelings just because someone is “being themselves” when their behavior hurts you.

There is nothing wrong with trying to make your relationship healthier by telling them what is hurting you.

And when I said it was always there, I meant…

They may have always been like that, maybe in a smaller percentage, but it was still there.

It’s just that during the honeymoon phase, you never paid attention to their flaws.

You only focused on their strengths.

You thought very highly of them in the beginning.

But once the honeymoon phase passes, you start noticing their other sides too, and suddenly you feel:

“Wait… something is wrong.”

I repeat —

If their behavior is hurting you in any way, speak up and talk to them.

The real ones will take responsibility.

Talking about old relationship problems much later can easily go in the wrong direction.

Maybe you will feel unheard.

That’s why you should talk about it when it hurts.

Don’t wait.

I know it can feel like:

“Why bother?” “Why fight when my silence can give us peace?”

Trust me, that is one of the worst decisions anyone can make in a relationship.

Talk about what hurts you.

Phase 4 — The Hardest Part

“A relationship is good until the songs you used to smile on start making you cry.”

This phase feels impossible.

Well… it’s almost impossible.

This is the stage where many relationships don’t survive.

Have you ever heard:

“The brightest mornings follow the darkest nights.”

But as I said before — never lose your moral values, dignity, or self-respect.

The right one will never ask you to sacrifice your dignity, self-respect, or moral values.

In this phase, your intuition will start talking to you…

Always listen to it.

But what makes this phase hard?

As the years pass, the curtains of reality start fading away, and you begin seeing the other side of it.

Everyone has two sides… a good one and a bad one…

It’s human nature.

But what matters is how those sides affect you.

Some will make you happy. Some will make you sad. Some may make you angry. Some may disappoint you. And some may simply make you tired.

Mental exhaustion is a huge part of this phase.

You both will misunderstand each other, make mistakes, and sometimes it may even feel like the relationship is about to end…

But we all know communication is the key.

Yes, it is — until neither you nor your partner wants to reciprocate.

A question for yourself:

Are you willing to hear your partner out and change your unhealthy habits for them?

(Remember, change only if it is unhealthy, and only if it does not cost you your dignity, self-respect, or moral values.)

You will know when something feels wrong. You will get a feeling.

And if you think it’s just your nervous system malfunctioning — wait.

Wait for the feeling to go away.

And if it doesn’t…

Then maybe it’s your intuition.

Your intuition often knows more than you do. It’s your subconscious mind screaming.

And always remember…

The hard part is only hard until both of you decide to fight it together.

It’s not a fight against each other. It’s a fight against the hard phase itself.

Trust your relationship. Trust your partner. Trust yourself.

Phase 5 — Forget & Forgive

After the storm… comes stillness.

After the pain… comes peace.

Congratulations to those who have come this far.

After suffering, crying, and almost separating…

Finally, you both made it this far.

Ready to forget everything. Ready to forgive each other. Ready for a fresh start with all the changes.

Yeah, it won’t feel the same because both of you have changed…

But you are going to love it even more than before.

Give time. Take time. And see the magic in your love.

To reach this phase asks for almost everything.

It becomes a choice between togetherness and separation.

And yet, you choose to stay.

You choose to grow the relationship. You choose to leave the pain behind. You choose to forgive each other.

That takes courage. A lot of courage.

I hope every relationship reaches this level.

Because this is the phase from where real happiness begins.

Phase 6 — Happy Ending

After all the storms. After all the misunderstandings. After all the growth and forgiveness.

Love starts feeling different now.

Not exciting like the beginning. Not intense like the hardest phase.

Just… peaceful.

A quiet kind of love.

The kind that doesn’t need to prove itself anymore.

Now you truly know each other like no one else does.

The trust, the comfort, and all the missing pieces have found their place.

The voids are filled.

You feel complete.

The half of you that was searching has finally found its other half.

This is your real honeymoon phase.

Everything feels like a fairytale again. Like a new love. A new life.

Now you believe perfection exists.

Not because your partner is perfect…

But because after accepting their dark side, you made them perfect in your eyes.

Be proud of each other.

This love — the one that survived everything — is the most beautiful kind of love there is.

Always be happy. 🌸

Final Thoughts

There are no final thoughts for this one.

Just this —

When you stick together, life becomes a little easier.
