The configuration of Qakbot

Court filings claim that Qakbot, also referred to as “Qbot” and “Pinkslipbot,” allowed threat actors to access victims’ networks without authorization starting at least in 2008. After that, the crooks exploited it to spread other software, including ransomware, and to start other kinds of assaults.

Qakbot has been utilized by the most active ransomware gangs, such as Conti, ProLock, Egregor, REvil, MegaCortex, and Black Basta, to obtain initial access to the networks of its victims.

It was determined by the investigators that after carrying out operations, the ransomware gangs sent a portion of the ransom payments to the Qakbot administrators.

The files pertaining to the botnet’s activity were made available to the investigators upon gaining access to Qakbot’s infrastructure. One of the files, “payments.txt,” contained information about ransomware assaults, such as the name of the victim, the identity of the ransomware attacker, and the quantity of bitcoin that the Qakbot administrators were paid.

A list of bitcoin addresses was also discovered by the investigators in a another file called “license.txt.” The addresses had received bitcoin from addresses that had received ransom payments, according to blockchain research.

The investigators concluded that Qakbot administrators received fees between October 2021 and April 2023, which they suspected to be the result of ransom payments totaling about $58 million.

On August 25, 2023, the investigators gained control of Qakbot’s infrastructure. Subsequently, they routed Qakbot’s communication via FBI-controlled servers. The hacked devices were then directed by the servers to download an uninstaller tool in order to get rid of the Qakbot virus.

Over 200,000 computers in the US were among the 700,000 systems that the investigators found to be infected with Qakbot globally.

The investigators removed the malware from the victims’ machines and also took $8.6 million in cryptocurrency from the Qakbot admins.
