Ancient Chinese astronomers once documented sightings as early as 240 BCE, making it one of the oldest recorded celestial objects in human history. Ancient civilizations lacked telescopes and modern astronomy to help them. Comets appear unpredictably to the naked eye. In Medieval Europe, the comet inspired fear rather than curiosity, as many viewed it as a sign of divine punishment, a sign of war, or a warning of famine. It was not received well.
Its most famous appearance came in 1066, when the comet was embroidered into the Bayeux Tapestry, a tapestry measuring in length some 230 feet long. Now residing in France, the tapestry is considered one of the most important artifacts to survive the Middle Ages. It provides propaganda, history, and art in a visual narrative of the Norman Conquest.
The comet’s shift from superstition to science began in the seventeenth century with Edmond Halley. Using Isaac Newton’s revolutionary laws of motion, Halley studied records of comets observed in 1531, 1607, and 1682 and concluded they were all the same object following a repeating orbit around the Sun. In 1705, he predicted the comet would return in 1758. This was very unusual for the time and reactions varied.
When the comet returned exactly as predicted sixteen years after Edmond Halley died, it became a major triumph for modern physics. This simultaneously proved Newton’s laws of motion and gravity. Suddenly, the heavens no longer appeared supernatural or chaotic. Halley’s successful prediction helps establish the idea that the universe operates according to measurable and predictable laws. It’s also the reason we all know it as Halley’s comet.
Today, scientists study the comet not only for its historical significance, but also for clues about the origins of our solar system. Modern astrophysicists such as Simon Portegies Zwart study the orbital dynamics and gravitational forces that shape comet paths over millions of years. Their work has revealed that cometary orbits are far less stable than once believed, constantly influenced by planetary gravity and collisions within the solar system.
Halley’s Comet travels at speeds exceeding 150,000 per hour near perihelion and leaves behind streams of debris that create annual meteor showers. To astronomers, the comet is like a frozen time capsule containing ancient material left over from the birth of the planets roughly 4.6 billion years ago
Public fascination with Halley’s Comet has always blurred the line between panic and science. During the comet’s 1910 flyby, newspapers sensationalized reports that Earth would pass through poisonous gases within the comet’s tail. Panic spread through Europe and the United States, panicked and desperate to be spared, people purchased on some occasions “Anti-Comet” pills, some also wore primitive gas masks. At the same time, some merely gathered outside to watch it cross the sky.
The event demonstrates humanity’s complex relationship with space, where fear and fascination often coexist. Large celestial objects approaching Earth is alarming. I totally get it.
When Halley’s Comet returned again in 1986, the reaction looked vastly different. Instead of fear, the comet inspired one of the largest international scientific efforts in space exploration history. The European Space Agency launched the Giotto probe, which flew as close as 600 kilometers to the comet’s nucleus and captured the first images of the comet. The images revealed its dark, icy surface releasing massive jets of dust and gas into space. For many people at the time, Halley’s Comet was the first introduction to any object approaching Earth in any real way.
The mission transformed humanity’s understanding of comets and confirmed that these objects are active remnants from the solar system’s earliest era.
Anticipation is already growing for Halley’s comet return in 2061, proving that even in the modern age, humanity remains captivated by the night sky.
