Nick Godejohn Files A Habeas Corpus, ‘If Gypsy Rose Blanchard Is Free, I Should Be, Too’

Nicholas Godejohn’s fight for freedom continues. His attorneys are working hard to get him a fair retrial and find a path to freedom. At times, this proved to be an impossible feat.

His attorneys are hopeful that the newest filing of Habeas Corpus will get Nick in front of a judge. Nick’s team claims he didn’t have a fair trial and no one brought up his disability (autism and mental health issues). This compounded with Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s light sentence, makes this case particularly heartbreaking.

Nicholas Godejohn gained notoriety for his role in the 2015 murder of Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, the mother of his then-girlfriend, Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The case shocked the nation, revealing years of abuse inflicted by Dee Dee on Gypsy, who was subjected to Munchausen syndrome by proxy — a condition where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in another person to gain sympathy and control.

Godejohn, who met Gypsy online, became deeply involved in her plan to escape her mother’s control. At Gypsy’s request, he traveled to her home in Springfield, Missouri, where he stabbed Dee Dee to death. The two fled but were soon arrested.

In 2019, Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison without parole for first-degree murder. His case continues to spark debate over the influence of psychological manipulation and the justice system’s handling of abuse victims turned perpetrators.

“Nick’s Habeas Corpus Petition is officially submitted! While we aimed for the 1st, getting it in by the 5th works perfectly. The legal file deadline is the 8th, so we’re a few days ahead! Please keep Nick in your prayers for a positive outcome. Together, we’ve got this!” Nick’s team posted to the Facebook group, NPG Cornerstone Nation.

“UPDATE 3/7: The Springfield office forwards the Habeas Corpus Petitions to the KC office, which scans them and marks them filed as the date of the postmark, so it may be another week before it’s processed, meaning we are good with the postmark of 3/3 and delivery of 3/5 … before the deadline of 3/8!” the Facebook group posted a few days later.

Nick reportedly told a supporter, “ I feel like, umm, if Gypsy is walking away a free woman, I should be free, too. I’m not asking for special treatment, just fairness.”
