Some Plants Meet You Halfway. Rhododendrons Don’t.

Rhododendrons and acidic soil are basically the same conversation.

I did not know that when I bought one and planted it straight into dense, clay-heavy soil. It looked like a reasonable decision at the time.

The first plant held on for a bit. Then the leaves lost their color, growth slowed, and it quietly declined. I blamed watering, light, timing — anything but the soil. Tried again the following season. Same outcome, just quicker.

At some point, it stopped feeling like bad luck.

Rhododendrons are not flexible about soil pH. They are built for consistently acidic conditions, more in line with woodland environments than a typical backyard. If that baseline is off, they do not adjust. They just stall out.

I tried amending the soil in place, thinking I could shift it enough to make a difference. It never stuck. The surrounding soil kept reverting things back.

That was the part I missed.

If I try again, it will be in a pot, with soil that actually stays acidic.

Some plants meet you halfway. This one does not.
