Database skills are the basis for many jobs in the IT industry. They are also important because they can accommodate a variety of career paths, from database developers to data mining professionals.

Database administrator

A Database Administrator (DBA) is a specialized computer system administrator who maintains a successful database environment by directing or performing all relevant activities to keep the data secure. DBA Professional’s primary responsibility is to maintain data integrity. This means that the DBA protects the data from unauthorized access and makes it available to users.

Some of the tasks of a DBA are designing the tables, designing and ensuring key constraints, improving the performance by monitoring the database, regularly taking the backup of the database to avoid failure and loss, and performing indexing to improve performance.

A DBA often has working knowledge and experience with a wide range of database management products such as Oracle-based software, SAP, and SQL. Be it any type of DBA in the company, some basic skills are expected from a person who is applying to this job such as

· Competency in data manipulation languages, including MS SQL, Oracle Database, Hadoop, or PostgreSQL

· Analytical mindset and good problem-solving skills

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Highly organized and responsible

· Capable of working under pressure

· Up to date with trends and developments in database administration

· Knowledge of data security, database management, backup and recovery of data, ERP & business knowledge.

Database designer

A database designer, or data officer, sometimes referred to as a database architect, is responsible for designing the databases in your organization. They evaluate business requirements and create data models. Next, an initial discussion with the business takes place to verify an understanding of the data and business processes. The job of a database designer also includes preparing support documentation when building a physical database.

So primarily database designers design, test, and implement databases applying knowledge of database management systems, guarding the protection and security of the database. One of the most important responsibilities of a database designer is to form relationships between various elements of data and give it a logical structure.

Data engineer

A data engineer is an IT professional whose main task is to prepare data for analytical or operational purposes.

They implement techniques to improve the reliability and quality of data. They combine raw information from different sources to create consistent and machine-readable formats. They also develop and test architectures to extract and transform data for predictive or prescriptive modeling. During various aspects of this process, Data engineers work in conjunction with data science teams improving data transparency and enabling businesses to make more trustworthy business decisions.

As a data engineer, to ensure success, you should demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and the ability to accept and utilize constructive criticism. A strong data engineer will demonstrate insatiable curiosity and excellent interpersonal skills. Some of the other essential skills (technical skills) for a data engineer are:

· Ability to build and optimize data sets, ‘big data’ data pipelines, and architectures

· Ability to perform root cause analysis on external and internal processes and data to identify opportunities for improvement and answer questions

· Excellent analytic skills associated with working on unstructured datasets

· Ability to build processes that support data transformation, workload management, data structures, dependency, and metadata

A Data Engineer position usually requires a hybrid of educational requirements starting from bachelor’s degree to certifications. Useful degrees for data engineers include bachelor’s degrees in applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or engineering. And additional vendor-specific certification like Google’s Certified Professional-Data-Engineer, the IBM Certified Data Engineer — Big Data certification, the CCP Data Engineer for Cloudera certification, and some other secondary certifications. Like any other database-related job, certifications alone aren’t enough to land a data engineering job. Experience is also necessary to be considered for a position.

Database programmers

A database programmer specializes in developing, maintaining, and modifying database software according to the needs of their clients. They design and write code for different programs, build and implement test systems, solve problems or issues, and upgrade systems as necessary. They will most likely use software that allows them to speed up the programming process and focus on the parts that are unique to a given programming mission.

Many employers in this area search for college graduates with more than one database programming language knowledge with applicable expertise and skills like:

· Ability to perform data modeling

· Knowledge of database programming languages (like SQL)

· Knowledge on extracting, transforming, loading various data types and sources

· Design and test database plans

· Knowledge to secure and optimize database performance

Apart from the above technical skills, a database programmer needs to be comfortable with communication, ability in detail and critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to perform to his/her maximum.

Database developer

A Database Developer (DBD) is an IT professional responsible for working on database technologies. Where database administrators are more concerned with day-to-day maintenance and support of existing database setups, database developers are often more concerned with improving the database, expanding its scope or functionality, or otherwise developing submissions for a company’s IT architecture.

They learn to work with old legacy data systems and integrate them with new databases to resolve bugs and errors. Database developers provide ongoing technical support, develop training manuals, and direct database administrators to database maintenance best practices. Their role is to make database users as easy as possible to access the information they need and to store information systems for future enterprise development.

A Database Developer needs the following core skills:

· Strong analytical capabilities. This work involves analyzing existing databases and the client’s future needs in developing effective systems.

· Good oral and written communication skills. It is important that database developers communicate clearly with team members and fully understand the needs of customers. Writing well-understood database documentation requires clear written skills.

· Sound accuracy and logic. A database developer must be able to develop a database logically and accurately from scratch.

· Understand the concepts of other programming languages. Since databases operate behind the scenes, a good database developer will understand the concepts of other front-end programming languages.

Most large companies require a candidate to have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or applied mathematics to take up the position of a database developer. Some small businesses employ people who have database certification. Completing a course from a trusted source such as Oracle Corporation or Microsoft is a bonus.
