Why should I keep living?

In a world filled with busy people who don’t seem to have a reason to live

Non-member? Here you go!

People are busy.

Now if you are someone who feels like all you do is scroll, eat and sleep, it’s still the same. There you are doing something. In action. But it feels like a mystery to see so many “perfect and successful” people on social media, while the ones you meet and speak with complain of not doing anything meaningful. You’ll be left wondering, where are all these successful people living then?

If you read the history of different civilizations, you’ll notice how there were only a few people who excelled in various fields. Their people honoured and respected them for their hard work, because only a handful of people seemed to be dedicated to grinding for a lifetime. But, nowadays, everyone seems to be pursuing knowledge. It may or may not be the case that they are passionate. People are valued based on how well they are known on social media, rather than how well they perform in their careers. It is as if, if they are well known, they are equal to trustworthy.

See how the world changes as generations change?

Everyone is busy meeting the standards. Either to meet the standards they have kept for themselves or to meet the standards of others. When you spend months hustling and trying to find meaning, it is in the most unexpected moment you realise the meaning of life.

What does it mean to live?

Why should I keep living?

What does it mean to be successful?

In the world we live in, being successful is attributed to materialistic achievements. If you have that ten-figure income, you are claimed to be the successful one. Top it with cars, estates, mansions and villas, and you are considered to be at a level no one can reach. I understand that even if all that glitters is not gold, the eyes shine and hearts get fooled by the delusion of what we see.

Who can we blame in here?

But, if this is the success you would love to achieve, then will you be able to simply enjoy the stillness in the middle of your day?

Will the desire to want more and more come to an end?

Will you not succumb to ungratefulness without you knowing?

Will you ever be satisfied?

Will you not then end up craving to fill the void in you that you haven’t noticed until you started wishing to not get exhausted?

Will you not then start questioning your existence?

I (Allah) did not create Jinn and humans except to worship me. ~ Qur’an 51:56

When I am lost wondering about the reason for my existence in this world, this is what Allah reminds me of. This soothes me when I feel like not talking for eternity. Because that is when I realise that even if I am all by myself not doing anything, I am in a form of worship. I am in a trance remembering him, a silent form of worship that only my heart and my lord witness. The moment I realise that nothing is unnoticed by the Almighty and the subtle one.

Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer; those who avoid idle talk; those who pay alms-tax; those who guard their chastity ~Quran 23:1–23:5

This is how Allah favours his people. You don’t have to earn a tonne, pile up degrees and be known worldwide to be considered successful. In Allah’s sight, believers are the successful ones. The ones who are in awe and bow down to their rabb with utmost humility. They submit to him with an empty heart. They worship Allah without associating partners with him. They turn away from falsehood and try to avoid sin at all costs. They do not talk unnecessarily and indulge in talks that do not benefit them. They are the ones who are true to their promise. And, no doubt, they are the ones who are blessed and have attained victory.

When Allah defines success in the most beautiful ways, believers distract themselves from worldly pleasures and end up tirelessly chasing the simplest of acts.

Also, who wouldn’t love to be famous in the heavens while walking peacefully on earth?

If you have read this far, I highly appreciate it. May Allah bless you.

A curious question: Have you achieved anything which you feel is worth living for?

Let me know in the comments; I would love to know your story.
