Why Is Most People’s Love Just Words?
Love is a term that is often spoken but rarely fully realized. We hear it in everyday conversation, often expressed towards partners, family, and friends. Yet, when we delve deeper into what love truly means, especially through the lens of Erich Fromm’s definition, we see that much of what is labeled as love is merely an empty declaration. Fromm argues that love is not just an emotion or a fleeting feeling; it is an active and committed practice that involves care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge.
Care and Responsibility
True love goes beyond verbal expressions and requires active care and responsibility for the other person’s needs. It means understanding their desires, fears, and struggles and taking action to support them. Unfortunately, many relationships are based on a superficial idea of love where care is absent or offered only when convenient. Parents may claim to love their children but impose their unfulfilled dreams onto them, partners may say they love each other but fail to take responsibility for the emotional or physical needs of their partner.

Respect Without Control
Respect is a fundamental aspect of love. It means valuing someone as an individual, free to make their own decisions and pursue their own goals. However, in many relationships, love is twisted into a justification for control. Some partners or parents might restrict the freedom of others under the guise of concern or protection. This is not love – it is control masquerading as affection. True love is about supporting someone’s independence while nurturing the connection you share.
Knowledge and Understanding
To love is to truly know the other person – understanding their thoughts, emotions, and unique essence. This level of connection requires effort, patience, and genuine curiosity about the other person’s experiences. Sadly, many relationships lack this depth. People often claim to love one another but have never taken the time to understand their partner or friend on a deeper level. This lack of knowledge leads to a disconnect between what is said and what is actually felt.
The Reality of Modern Relationships
When we hold modern relationships against Fromm’s definition of love, we realize that many couples, families, and friendships fall short. There is often care, but it’s not consistent or attentive; there is responsibility, but it doesn’t come with respect; there is affection, but it is not grounded in understanding. In many cases, love is used as a superficial label, covering up selfishness, neglect, or control rather than representing genuine emotional support and growth.
The True Meaning of Love
To love someone authentically is to act – not just to say you love them, but to show it through consistent, caring actions. It’s about being responsible for their emotional well-being, respecting their autonomy, and taking the time to truly understand them. Real love is not self-serving; it is a commitment to the growth and happiness of another person, offering them the space to flourish as an individual.
In a world where love is often misunderstood as a mere feeling or possession, Fromm’s perspective serves as a reminder that love is a practice – an art that requires effort, attention, and selflessness. True love is not about claiming to love, but about demonstrating it in every action, every word, and every gesture.
