Spectacles or Contact lenses ?

‘Do I really need to wear glasses ?’ This is the most. common response of almost 80 percent of patients who gets prescribed for refractive errors . As an optometrist, convincing a patient to actually wear spectacles regularly is itself a task . In this era where everyone is in public exposure , people often prefer to keep their faces cosmetically appealing .

For this very reason, most patients come up with the next obvious question, Spectacles or contact lenses ? Which one is better ? ’. Now , as obvious as the question sounds , the answer to that isn’t quite obvious. As an optometrist, my response to it would be , It depends ’ . Both have their own benefits and limitations.

Let’s look at spectacles first. Spectacles are the most commonly prescribed method of treatment for refractive errors. It’s easily accessible and easier to maintain . You don’t always need a. doctor or an optometrist for a spectacle dispensing . An expert optician will do just fine. But higher prescriptions in spectacles can also cause some visual distortion, particularly towards the edges of the lens – something contact lenses largely eliminate since the lens moves with your eye.

When it comes to contact lenses, it’s a preferable choice for any patient looking for a cosmetically more appealing option. Unlike spectacles, contact lenses move with your eye, providing a fuller, more natural field of vision. But contact lenses are higher maintenance than spectacles. Patients should maintain good hand hygiene, follow the recommended cleaning and replacement schedule, avoid water exposure, and discontinue lens wear immediately if they experience redness, pain, or reduced vision. Regular follow-up examinations are essential to ensure safe and comfortable contact lens wear.

My childhood friend Rhea has been wearing spectacles since she was ten. Studious, career-focused and always jam-packed with schedules – she never cared to step out of her comfort zone for her looks. But recently, when she was ready to get married, she decided on a makeover and finally parted ways with her long-standing specs. She looks her best now.

Rhea’s story is something I think about when patients ask me this question. If you’re someone like her – busy, comfort-driven, with little bandwidth for a new routine – spectacles are your best starting point. They’re forgiving, low-maintenance and always there when you need them. And when you feel ready, contact lenses will be waiting. You don’t have to choose forever. You just have to choose what works for you right now.
