Why Recommend Kintetsu Rail Pass?
The most convenient and money-saving way to travel from Osaka to Nara is to take the Kintetsu Railway. This time we actually used the Kintetsu Rail Pass 1 Day, which was very smooth overall and very suitable for arranging a one-day trip to Nara.
The Kintetsu 1-Day Pass includes practical benefits:
- Unlimited rides on the day between Osaka Namba ⇄ Kintetsu Nara
- Free rides on Nara City Buses
- Discount coupons for some cooperating merchants
In particular, “Free rides on Nara City Buses” is a huge plus for travelers whose legs are already tired in the latter part of the itinerary, and it also makes the itinerary much more flexible.
Notes on Kintetsu Rail Pass
There is a small detail to note before use: The Kintetsu Rail Pass cannot be used for Limited Express trains. If you want to take the Limited Express, you need to purchase a separate Limited Express ticket.
However, this is actually quite reasonable because the Limited Express is a reserved-seat service. The time difference when taking the Local or Rapid Express to Nara is not significant, and it has little impact on a one-day round trip itinerary.
My suggestion: If you have good physical strength and like walking, you can just swipe your IC card; if you are traveling with elders or children, or want to visit the main hall of Kasuga Taisha which is further away, buying a one-day pass and taking the bus will be much easier.

Depart from Shinsaibashi to Nara
This time we stayed at Comfort Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi, and the location itself is very convenient. We walked directly from the hotel to the nearest Kintetsu station — Kintetsu Nippombashi Station.

It just so happens that Kintetsu Nippombashi Station does not stop Limited Express trains, so the trains “bound for Nara” seen on the platform can basically be boarded directly, which is very friendly for travelers using Kintetsu for the first time.
The entire journey from downtown Osaka to Nara takes about 40–45 minutes. The time is not long and it goes directly to Nara, making it very suitable for a relaxing day trip.
Arrive at Nara: Takeout “Kakinoha Sushi”
As soon as you exit Kintetsu Nara Station, I suggest not rushing to the scenic spots. You can first buy Nara’s most representative local delicacy, Kakinoha Sushi (Persimmon Leaf Sushi), in the shopping street near Kintetsu Nara Station.
Kakinoha Sushi is a type of pressed sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves with mackerel or salmon. The rice and fish are specially pickled, and because of its excellent preservation, it is very suitable as a takeout bento. This trip we bought a box of mixed flavor sushi, planning to have a casual picnic in the forest later. This decision directly added points to today’s itinerary!
Kasuga Taisha: Looking for Super Cute “Deer Fortune”
Visiting Kasuga Taisha
After buying Kakinoha Sushi, considering it was our first time here, we chose to walk up the mountain, walking slowly along the approach, aiming for Kasuga Taisha (Kasuga Grand Shrine), one of the most representative shrines in Nara.

Although the approach is slightly sloped, the ancient trees on both sides reach the sky and are surrounded by green shade. The air is so fresh that you want to take a deep breath.

On this trip, both of us purchased admission tickets. Following the tour guide, the vermilion corridor architecture and rows of bronze lanterns shine against each other. The photo effect is extremely beautiful, and you can feel the profound historical heritage.
Must-experience Highlight: Shika-mikuji (Deer Fortune)
When you come to Kasuga Taisha, you must not miss this super popular small item! The wooden carved deer holds a fortune slip in its mouth. It is a cute item that can only be bought here. After drawing the fortune, the deer can be taken home directly as a souvenir. It is a Nara souvenir that is both ceremonial and cute.
Forest Stroll + Picnic: Hidden Route to Nigatsu-do
After leaving Kasuga Taisha, we did not choose to walk back to the main road to crowd with tourists, but turned into the forest path leading to Nigatsu-do. This is a relatively unpopular route, and the crowds were obviously much fewer.
On the way, we found a bench and took out the Kakinoha Sushi we bought earlier to start eating.

Picnicking in a forest surrounded by ancient trees, with only a few deer resting around. This kind of “doing nothing” time without itinerary pressure unexpectedly became the most healing fragment of the entire Nara trip.
Nigatsu-do: Free Tea Room + Nara City View Perspective
Walking further up along the path, you will arrive at my personal favorite place Nigatsu-do.
It is much quieter here than the famous Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall. Standing on the corridor of Nigatsu-do, you can overlook the entire Nara city area from a high vantage point. The view is very open, and the mood becomes suddenly enlightened.

Private Highlight: Free Tea Room (Rest Area)
Next to Nigatsu-do, there is a rest space that provides hot tea, which anyone can enter and use freely. There is hot tea and hot/cold water inside for travelers to rest. There is also a heater when it is cold outside. When you are tired from walking, drinking a cup of hot tea and resting your feet here will instantly save your legs. It is a midway rest stop with super high CP value.

The walls of this tea room are full of introductions to all the processes of the traditional festival rituals of Nigatsu-do, and there are several paintings depicting the scenes during the festival, which is truly spectacular.
Todai-ji: The Shocking Great Buddha of Nara

After replenishing our physical strength, we went down the mountain to Todai-ji, the most classic landmark in Nara.

Seeing the huge wooden building of the Great Buddha Hall was directly shocking. The Rushana Buddha enshrined in the hall is 15 meters high, and the solemnity really makes people quiet down unconsciously.
It is recommended to reserve time to slowly appreciate the details of the Buddha statue and the architectural structure. This is not just a check-in spot, but also the core of Nara’s history.
Deer Feeding Experience
Finally, after visiting Todai-ji, we walked back slowly. Naturally, we had to interact with the deer herds on the way. We bought deer crackers directly and started feeding. I can only teach you a small trick here. If you are besieged by deer, run fast. The deer will not catch up. This trick is effective.
Bus back to Kintetsu Nara
Everyone was tired after feeding the deer, so we waited for the bus directly at the nearest bus stop. The buses here in Nara are also very considerate. Someone will get off and shout in Japanese and English that this bus will pass the station. Just show the Kintetsu 1-Day Pass to get on. It took us back down the mountain very quickly, very worth it.
Daibutsu Pudding (Mahoroba Daibutsu Pudding) Nara Souvenir
Before preparing to take the train back to Osaka, the last stop must be reserved for Nara’s most popular dessert Daibutsu Pudding.
There is a branch inside Kintetsu Nara Station, which is very convenient. If you go down from the escalator inside the station, it will appear directly in front of you. The pudding tastes dense, with a rich egg and milk aroma. There are many flavors to choose from on site. Paired with the cute Great Buddha glass jar, it is really cute. The taste is super dense, a bit unlike pudding.
