Ode to Dover – by a Seagull

I have flown not too far nor wide,

But seen the lands a-new,

I am surprised still, that,

Like Dover there are few.

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love thy tossing sea!

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love the sight of thee.

I’ve been to Bath’s waters brisk,

Flowing over golden stone,

Dived over fair resting Greece,

But not an island compares to my own…

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love thy tossing sea!

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love the sight of thee.

I’ve been to Scotland’s breezes good,

Seen Nessie’s tail- besides;

I’ve hopped over to Canterbury sweet,

Where Chaucer still resides.

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love thy tossing sea!

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love the sight of thee.

Dover look, thine castles old,

Still shine with gloried mind,

And Dover dear, thy silver cliffs,

Still battle with ancient winde.

And still it is, no matter where I go,

I still dwell upon thine;

And at travel’s end, when we come back home,

I shriek at thy waters brine.

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love thy tossing sea!

Oh Dover! oh Dover! I love the sight of thee.

And Dover oh! oh Dover mine,

Never will I leave thee,

Thou has my lifelong faithfulness,

I’ll prove it to thou, see:

I went to all these places fine,

Yet still didn’t lose my heart;

This poem isn’t as good as Captain Seagull’s song,

But for me it is a start.
