What the Heck Is Rebar?

You’ve seen those steel bars with ridges all over them on a construction site, right? Those are rebar. Concrete by itself is pretty good at taking compression, but if you try to bend it or pull it, it’s brittle and cracks easily. Rebar is different — it’s really strong in tension. You put rebar inside concrete, the concrete takes the compression, the rebar takes the tension, and the two work together. That’s reinforced concrete — and pretty much every building these days relies on it.
First, the different types — don’t overthink it
The most obvious difference is the surface.
One type is plain round bar. It looks just like a smooth steel rod. It doesn’t bond very tightly with concrete, so it’s only used in secondary spots — like stirrups or hooks. The grade is called HPB300.
The other type is deformed bar, also called rebar or ribbed bar. It has two longitudinal ribs and lots of transverse ribs all around. It bites into the concrete really well. For main reinforcing in beams, columns, and slabs — that’s what you use. The most common grade is HRB400, which people on site call “Grade 3 rebar”. There are also HRB500 and HRB600 — those are stronger.
Strength is just a number: HRB400 has a minimum yield strength of 400 MPa, HRB500 is 500 MPa. Higher numbers mean harder steel, but harder isn’t always better — too hard and it gets brittle. For an ordinary house, 400 is plenty. For high‑rise buildings or long spans, you might use 500 to save a little steel.
And there’s a special type for earthquakes. The grade has an “E” at the end, like HRB400E. It’s not just strong enough — it also has to be ductile enough, so it won’t just snap without warning. In seismic zones, you must use this.
What’s good about rebar?
Basically, rebar and concrete are a perfect match. Their coefficients of thermal expansion are almost the same, so when the temperature changes, they expand and contract together without fighting each other.
Rebar itself is strong and tough. Before it breaks under tension, it will first stretch and get thinner — it won’t suddenly crack without any warning. That’s really important for safety. If a building is about to fail, the rebar will give you a heads‑up first.
Plus, rebar is easy to work with. You can bend it, cut it, weld it, tie it — there are standard tools and procedures for all of that on site. Workers do it every day.
Where is it used? Everywhere.
Wherever there’s concrete, there’s almost always rebar.
- The house you live in — the beams, the slabs, the columns, the stairs — all have steel skeletons made of rebar.
- Bridge piers and decks — packed with rebar inside.
- Road pavements, tunnel walls, dams — without rebar, they couldn’t hold up.
- And all those precast slabs, piles, utility poles — they’re made in a factory and brought to site, and they’re full of rebar too.
So yeah, in modern construction, rebar is the skeleton.
A few common questions
Is ribbed rebar more expensive than plain round bar? For the same diameter, ribbed rebar is maybe RMB 100‑200 per tonne more expensive. But because it bonds so well, you sometimes need less of it, so the total cost difference isn’t huge.
Can you use rusty rebar? It depends. A thin layer of surface rust — the kind you can wipe off or scrub with a wire brush — is fine. But if the rust is flaking off in layers or you can gouge out a pit, then the cross‑section is already damaged. Don’t use that.
Why do you need the “E” grade for earthquakes? Ordinary rebar can take tension, but during an earthquake the structure will sway back and forth, and the rebar has to bend and bend without breaking. The “E” grade is specifically made for this. It has a stricter requirement: the total elongation at maximum force must be at least 9%, while ordinary rebar only needs 7.5%. Don’t underestimate that extra one percent — when it really matters, that’s the difference.
One sentence to remember
Rebar is the steel bar buried inside concrete that takes all the tension. On a typical job site, HRB400 ribbed rebar is the workhorse. Plain round bars are only for secondary spots. And if you’re building in an earthquake zone, don’t forget the “E”.
