Scientists Warn Satellite Collision Cascade Could Begin Within 72 Hours

A new arXiv study likens today’s satellite mega-constellations to a “house of cards,” warning that their apparent stability hides growing fragility. With satellites passing dangerously close every few seconds, operators must constantly steer spacecraft away from collisions — an increasingly complex task as thousands more satellites crowd low-Earth orbit.
Researchers identify solar storms as a critical weak point. These events heat the upper atmosphere, increasing drag and throwing satellite positions off course. More severe storms can shut down navigation and communication systems entirely, leaving spacecraft unable to respond. During the powerful May 2024 Gannon Storm, over half of orbiting satellites were forced to reposition.
Using a new “CRASH Clock,” the study estimates that losing collision-avoidance control today could trigger a catastrophic crash in just 2.8 days. With historic solar events like the 1859 Carrington storm as precedent, the authors urge serious reflection on whether the rapid expansion of satellite networks is putting humanity’s access to space at risk.
