Launch a linux virtual machine with Amazon Lightsail

In today’s lesson, I gained practical experience with Amazon Lightsail, AWS’s simplified cloud hosting platform. Here’s a summary of the key concepts and skills I learned:

  1. Launching a Linux Virtual Machine: I successfully launched a Linux virtual machine (VM) on Lightsail. This involved choosing the appropriate OS, selecting an instance plan, and configuring the instance for my application needs. Lightsail simplifies the process by providing an easy-to-use interface for creating and managing instances.
  2. Connecting via SSH: Once the instance was up and running, I connected to it via SSH directly from the Lightsail console terminal. This step is essential for managing the server and deploying applications or configuring services.
  3. Creating and Managing Static IP Addresses: One important aspect of cloud infrastructure is IP address management. By default, the IP address of a Lightsail instance changes every time it’s stopped and started. To avoid this issue, I learned how to create a static IP address from the Networking section of Lightsail and attach it to the instance. This ensures that my instance retains the same IP address, even after restarting.
  4. Creating Snapshots and Recreating Instances: To enhance my backup and recovery processes, I learned how to create snapshots of my Lightsail instance manually. Snapshots are useful for saving the state of an instance at a particular point in time. Additionally, Lightsail offers the option to create new instances from an existing snapshot, allowing for easier replication or recovery of data.

Lessons

Through this project,i have been able to understand what snapshot meant and not just implementation but how it works.

Here are 6 key words from the lessons I’ve learned:

  1. Snapshot
  2. Static IP
  3. SSH
  4. Instance
  5. Backup
  6. Networking
