A DMX patch sheet is the working document that maps:
- Fixture names / labels (e.g., “Spot SR 1”)
- DMX mode / channel count (e.g., 16ch, 24ch, 51ch)
- Universe number
- Start address (1–512 per universe)
- Channel ranges (e.g., U2: 145–160)
In other words: it’s the single source of truth that keeps your console patch, fixture labels, pixel mapping, and crew communication aligned.
A good patch sheet reduces:
- Address collisions (two fixtures fighting for the same channels)
- Universe overflow surprises
- Rework when quantities or modes change
- “What address is that again?” chatter during tech
Why we made a DMX Patch Sheet Generator

What the generator does

A quick DMX addressing refresher (so your patch stays sane)
Even if you already know this, it’s worth stating clearly because it affects every patch sheet:
- DMX is organized into universes
- Each universe has 512 channels
- Each fixture consumes a number of channels based on its mode
- A fixture’s start address determines which channels it occupies
Example: A 16-channel fixture starting at address 101 uses channels 101–116.
That means the next 16-channel fixture could start at 117 (if you’re patching sequentially).
Common patch sheet mistakes this tool helps prevent
Address collisions
Two fixtures end up starting at the same address (or overlapping ranges). That leads to unpredictable behavior: wrong colors, random dimmer changes, flicker, movement glitches.
Universe overflow
You’re happily counting up… until a high-channel fixture (say, 51ch mode) doesn’t fit at the end of a universe. Now you’re repatching during load-in.
Label chaos
Fixtures called “Wash 1” on paperwork, “LEDWash_03” on the console, and “Downstage Wash” on the truss labels… and nobody knows what’s what.

Tips for cleaner patches (from real-world pain)
- Choose modes intentionally: More channels aren’t always better. Pick the lowest mode that still gives you the control you need.
- Group fixture types: Patch washes together, spots together, strobes together — debugging becomes much easier.
- Leave buffer space (optional): Some crews like leaving small gaps between fixture groups for future additions.
- Match labels everywhere: Patch sheet ↔ console ↔ physical labels should be identical.
