The author sits down to write a story. He was given a topic by a Medium publication: the theme of chasing. But the characters and the plot he must handle on his own.
His fingers hover over the keyboard, as if they could summon the ideas by magic. They wriggle and dance in the air. No magic comes.
He looks for ideas in the freezer, but only finds Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.
He pursues the idea to the bottom of the pint, where it must surely be hidden.
No luck.
He meditates.
Which is to say he puts on a video of lo-fi girl, retreats into himself, and imagines different things that chase or are chased.
Perhaps a monster is chasing a man.
Perhaps a man is chasing a monster.
Perhaps an old man is chasing the youth that got away from him.
An idea comes to him. A brilliant idea. He chases the white rabbit of an idea through the labyrinth of his mind, down through a hole beneath a tree, and grabs it by the tail as it floats.
He opens his eyes. Surely, this is an idea worth a million claps.
He runs to his laptop. His fingers move furiously, pounding out every feeling he has ever had, unleashing all of the words that will reduce his readers to shapeless bundles of tears — words that will dissect their souls so they may see what lies within, so that they may be reborn and renewed through the lightning of his prose.
He reads over what he has written.
Utter shit.
He deletes it all. He releases the idea back into the wild.
Perhaps there will be no story today.
