Christians Are Using FAKE Bible Verses to Control Your Sex Life

You were fooled! Church authorities have been using some of the verses in the Bible to discipline your sexual activity, partners and level of satisfaction for centuries. The shocking part? Many of these “rules” are based on verses that have been mistranslated, taken out of context, or even fabricated in the later interpretation.

Think about it. As soon as the word “biblical sexuality” spills from the lips, guilt seizes you — premarital sex is sin, lust is adultery, women’s bodies are supposed to be the husband’s. What if those commands were never meant to be chains around our feet for eternity? What if they were cultural artifacts bent into instruments of control?

Read the famous quote on “sexual immorality.” Vague old Greek terms were rendered by translators into general prohibitions on all things fun! In the Song of Songs, however, the text feels like steamy erotic poetry: no shame at all in expressing desire. What’s the point of the church not caring about the heat and focusing on the restrictions?

Some verses that were meant to oppress women and to limit pleasure don’t even say what modern preachers say. Over time, the text was colonized by patriarchy, thereby establishing control hierarchies in mutual relationships.

The real scandal? This selective reading maintains people in an anxious state, a repressive state and a state of dependency on religious authority rather than experiencing their bodies freely. There was nothing nearly as prudish about early Christians and the Bible as the culture warriors today would have us believe.

Whenever considering a verse of scripture to shame your sex life, request the context. You may find that the “rules” didn’t exist as strictly as they seemed to. It’s your pleasure, your body, your choices. Perhaps it’s time to face the truth.
