MAN 1 Yogyakarta Student Wins Provincial MHQ Championship, Murojaah Becomes the Key to Success

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — Another proud achievement has been recorded by MAN 1 Yogyakarta. Mecca Izzy Al Khoiri, a Grade X PK 2 student, secured First Place in the Musabaqah Hifdzil Qur’an (MHQ) for Senior High School/Islamic Senior High School level at the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Provincial Competition during the 2026 Islamic Science and Art (ISnA) Competition.

The competition was organized by Chaanakya Ekadanta Academy in collaboration with UKM Al-Mizan of Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on Sunday (01/03/2026) at the Language Development Center Building of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The event brought together high school students from across DIY to strengthen connections and foster a positive competitive spirit in Islamic science and arts.

In the competition, Mecca participated in the MHQ category, specifically the continuation of Qur’anic verses from Juz 28 to 30. She revealed that consistent murojaah (Qur’an revision) played a crucial role in her preparation and performance.

“I try to maintain daily murojaah. When continuing one of the verses, I paused briefly because my concentration was slightly disrupted. However, I was able to refocus and continue the requested verse correctly,” Mecca explained.

Her steady preparation enabled her to outperform participants from various senior high schools and madrasahs across Yogyakarta.

Principal Edi Triyanto, S.Ag., S.Pd., M.Pd., emphasized that this achievement reflects the tangible impact of Qur’anic character development at the madrasah.

“What makes us happiest is not only Mecca’s victory, but the process behind it. When students make the Qur’an part of their daily life, achievement often follows naturally,” he stated.

This accomplishment further affirms MAN 1 Yogyakarta’s commitment to nurturing students who excel not only academically but also possess strong religious character and a deep love for the Qur’an.
