Graham Platner Officially Withdraws From Maine U.S. Senate Race

AUGUSTA, Maine (LMN) — Graham Platner has officially withdrawn as the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, ending a campaign that unraveled this week following allegations of sexual assault and clearing the way for the Maine Democratic Party to select a replacement candidate for November’s general election.

Platner submitted the required signed withdrawal paperwork to the Maine Secretary of State on Friday, making his exit from the race official under Maine election law. Earlier in the week, Platner announced he was suspending his campaign in an 11-minute online video while denying the allegations against him and criticizing national Democratic leaders and what he described as the political establishment.

The withdrawal follows allegations of sexual assault made by a former girlfriend, accusations that Platner has repeatedly denied. The controversy prompted numerous Democratic officials and political allies to call for his withdrawal, including several who had previously supported his campaign.

Maine election law permits a political party to replace a nominee who withdraws before the statutory deadline. The Maine Democratic Party has already approved plans to convene a nominating convention to choose a new Senate candidate. Under state law, the replacement nominee must be selected by July 27.

Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer, won the Democratic primary in June after running an insurgent campaign that attracted support from progressive activists and national political figures. His candidacy, however, had already faced scrutiny over previous controversies before the latest allegation brought his campaign to an abrupt end.

The race to challenge incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins remains one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate contests. Democrats view the Maine seat as critical to their efforts to regain control of the U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. Following Platner’s withdrawal, several Democrats have emerged as potential replacement candidates, including Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, and former Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah, among others.

The Maine Democratic Party is expected to announce additional details regarding its nominating convention in the coming days as party leaders work to unite behind a new candidate ahead of the general election.
