I do it. You do it. Let’s not pretend.

Why Bed Scrolling Is a Part-time Job (You Don’t Get Paid For)

I do it. You do it. Let’s not pretend.

The infinite scroll is our modern soul prison.

But what it’s also?

A lot of unpaid work.

While I was writing my newest post on bedtime scrolling, and looking at stats for it (average social media consumption), which is 2h 20m a day and **16h per week**, it hit me.

That’s literally a part time job.

I could have earned quite a bit in that time that I lost to brain rot, mainly in bed. That’s also why that wonderful term “bedrotting” came to be. I totally get it.

I think we all tend to think that it’s just a little bit of time that gets lost while checking this and checking that, nothing to see here, right?

But accumulated, we’re on average wasting 858 hours a year.

Multiply that by the average hourly rate for a job in your country, and you have the minimum your time is worth online.

And it actually is.

Otherwise the algorithm wouldn’t draw you in from one rabbit hole to the next. They’re getting something for it. Your attention (and your sanity if you will), and eventually yours or someone else’s money too.

If you don’t know how those algorithms work, in a nutshell it’s basically to show you more of what you’ve already seen (watched it, clicked it, read it, etc.).

Anyhows, not to paint an entirely black picture here, it really depends on what you spend your time on online, and what content you consume, not just the time you spend on it.

And who of all have the least time in this society?

Us mothers.

That’s why we can’t wait for our little ones to sleep peacefully at night, to eventually get some me time.

But what is there to do at 7, 8, 9pm, if not scroll?

We’re doomed… or not.

If you are a mum yourself, you might find the full article on this topic interesting, check it out (linked below). It’s definitely healthier than doomscrolling ;)
