Why Athlete Mindset Matters in Life
If you ever played a sport seriously and dreamed of making it to the top, this is for you.
Everyone who considers themselves an athlete has wondered, at least once, about making it to the big stage — NHL, NBA, NFL, Premier League.
But let’s look at what the numbers actually say.

The Odds
Of course making it to the top requires many things to align: hard work, dedication, avoiding injury, timing, and luck.
But here’s what we know:
- The odds of a high school player making it to the NHL: ~0.1%
- The odds of making it to the NBA: 0.03%
- The odds of making it to the NFL: 0.08%
(Data taken from wolfpups)
And that’s just in the U.S.
There are millions more kids worldwide competing for the same dream.
Read it again and just realize.
You can be extremely good, and still never touch the top.
And I don’t discourage others from thinking about making it. Dream and Dream Big.
But dream with the right mindset:
Since the chance is small, preparation has to be enormous.
Because success is where opportunity meets preparation, and unfortunately in sport, opportunities are rare.
What Happens When the Dream Ends
A lot of athletes think all the effort is just for making it.
So when they don’t, everything is forgotten.
Training becomes optional. Nutrition disappears when there’s a bag of Doritos in front of you. You fall into the use of regular drinking or something worse.
But here’s what we forget:
When that ends, we lose what we built:
- Consistency
- Work ethic
- Self-control
- The ability to do something even when you don’t feel like it
Sports Isn’t Just About Sports
When sports was serious, here’s what it taught me:
Habits beat motivation. Even bad days count. Small details matter.
And those lessons don’t only improve athletic performance. They spread everywhere.
In relationships: Attention to detail. Working through tough moments. Showing up prepared.
In business:
Delayed gratification. Skill compounding. Staying consistent without applause.
The foundation and willingness to do the reps long before the reward appears
Sports gives that.
The Real Question
What I want to say is that even if you don’t make it to the highest level, life doesn’t end there.
In fact, you should keep training harder because now the stakes are different.
Now it’s not about a contract. It’s about sustaining a happy, successful life across all domains.
The discipline you built by waking up at 5 a.m. for practice will help in building business.
The resilience you learned after losing and showing up the next day, can help in relationships.
The focus developed blocking out distractions will help finish hard projects when there is absolutely no motivation.
