Best Way to Purify Water

My grandmother lived on a mountainside, and just above her house, a small spring bubbled out of the rock. She and the neighbor woman had built a well there. She didn’t have to turn on a faucet. She just had to go outside with a bucket, walk a few steps up the slope, and hold the bucket under the water pump. Out came cold, clear mountain spring water. Beautifully cold, refreshing, and sparkling.

As a child, I bathed in that well during the hot summers with many cousins. The water was truly ice cold. We got blue lips very quickly and shivered, freezing, our teeth chattering violently. I still laugh when I remember this. We had so much fun. We loved drinking that mountain spring water.
“This is living water,” my grandmother said as she filled the bucket. As a child, I didn’t understand what she meant. That mountain spring water was simply a given for me.
Today I know much better: the water from the mountain had never been forced through pipes, never treated with chlorine, never stored in a tank. It came directly from the earth, cold and fresh, and it tasted of the spring from which it rose.
My grandmother always let me drink that water. She and the entire neighborhood were always well supplied with it. Such clear, crystal-clear water: as a child, I felt truly rich with that water. It felt cold and sparkling in my throat and quenched my thirst so well.
And today? In the city, I was always searching for that wonderfully good water. I have running water in my apartment. And I’m grateful for it. But I could never drink the water from the tap without feeling disgusted. That water always has a strange and stale taste.
When you’ve grown up with mountain spring water like I did, you know that taste.
In the city, I tried countless water filters and was satisfied with none of them. My husband even said to me: “You have very high standards!”
Yes, I do, and I stand by that! It’s simply very important for your health.
After all that trial and error, I arrived at the simplest solution. The same one my grandmother practiced: she boiled water on the wood stove and placed two large lids partially overlapping on top, connecting them to another pot. The steam rose and then dripped into the other pot. That was distilled water.
I do it with an electric water distiller. My grandmother said it was nonsense to artificially enrich water with minerals. She got her high-quality minerals from high-quality foods and high-quality salt.
I know this much for certain: if tomorrow the faucet runs dry and the bottles are empty, I have nothing my grandmother had. I have no mountain spring at my doorstep. I have to fetch water with buckets. So it’s not a given that you always have water on hand.
And besides, water is always the first thing that becomes scarce in any crisis. Not bread, not electricity! It’s always water that we need. Most of us living an urban lifestyle have exactly zero liters of water in the house that don’t come from the tap. You can survive a long time without food. Without water, only three days before life-threatening dehydration sets in.
Take the first step. Buy a ten-liter canister, fill it with water, and put it in the cellar or pantry. Or start filtering your tap water or boiling it with a water distiller and storing it in glass bottles. Best in blue glass or darkened black glass.
You can also find out whether there’s a mountain spring near you that you’ve never noticed because the supermarket was always closer. Drive there and try the water. It must always taste cold, refreshing, and sparkling.
If you like it, fill it into large canisters. Glass bottles would be best, since plastic bottles often contain plasticizer components that can leach out.
Water you’ve fetched or purified yourself tastes completely different from water you get from the tap or buy in bottles. Once you’ve tasted real mountain spring water, nature has thoroughly spoiled you, and your standards have risen dramatically. You’ll feel more than clearly how good it does your body.
