The Yankees ended their series against the White Sox with a 3–2 loss

On Sunday, the Yankees had a 3–2 getaway game loss to the Chicago White Sox to end their seven game winning streak, which was the longest current winning streak in Major League Baseball.

Since the Yankees lost on Sunday and the Blue Jays won, the Yankees are now three games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East. Since the Reds had a walk-off win over the Blue Jays on Labor Day with the Yankees not having a game on Labor Day, the Yankees are now just 2.5 games behind Toronto. The Red Sox also won on Sunday, which means they are in third place and just half a game behind the Yankees in the AL East. The Yankees have a half a game lead over the Red Sox for the first wild card spot and the Mariners, who are in the third and final wild card spot, are three games behind the Yankees.

The Yankees are 37–37 against teams that are over .500 this year. If they play to that trend and go 6–6 in their remaining 12 games against teams over .500 against Houston, Toronto, Detroit and Boston they would be fine. since their last 13 games of the season are against the Twins, Orioles and White Sox.

The Yankees have a remaining strength of schedule of .495. Only the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians have easier schedules out of all of the nine teams in the American League who have a winning record.

With the loss, the Yankees are now 40–26 against sub .500 teams. Since August 15, the Yankees are 12–4, which is the best record in the league in that span. During seven game winning streak they trailed for just half an inning. Last time they won 10 consecutive road games was 1994. With a win on Sunday it would have been 10 road wins in a row for the first time since 1994. In the 1994 season, the Yankees had the best record in the American League at the time of the MLB strike on August 11, which ended the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.

Luis Gil allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings but was not able to get the win since the Yankees went 1–5 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Anthony Volpe grounded into a double play and the six through nine batters in the lineup went a combined 1–12.

Gil has now allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts after allowing five runs in his first start of his season. He allowed five earned runs in 3.1 innings on August 3 but has allowed just seven earned runs in in 26 innings in his last five starts. He was able to cut down on his walks in this start since he allowed just two walks after allowing four, five and three walks in his last three starts.

Gil has had some problems throwing his fastball for strikes and his walk rate has been up this season. He is allowing 5.8 walks per nine innings this season after allowing 4.6 walks per nine innings last season when he led the league in walks with 77 in his 29 starts as a rookie when he won the Rookie of the Year. If he can get his walk rate to be in the 3.0 walks per nine innings range he could be a Cy Young candidate next season since his walk rate is the main thing he needs to improve. He has pitched very well with runners on base this season.

He has thrown at least five innings and allowed two earned runs or less in his last five starts. He had been walking nearly 16 percent of batters this season. Gil had very efficient first inning needing just eight pitches. Gil has taken a little off of his velocity in an effort to try to locate his pitches better. His three primary pitches and they are his four seam fastball, slider and changeup.

Gil allowed an RBI double to left fielder Will Robertson, who was 1–23 this season as a rookie coming into this game, in the second inning to tie the score at one and in the sixth inning cleanup hitter Colson Montgomery hit a homer to centerfield. Montgomery now has a productive 15 homers in 46 games this season. Before that homer, the Yankees had done well against the White Sox cleanup hitter since he was 0–2 in this game and 1–9 in his previous two games in the series. That homer by Montgomery tied the score at two. Gil used good high fastball to strikeout Montgomery in the 3rd inning. Gil had a strikeout looking of designated hitter Kyle Teel to end the 5th for his nine consecutive out in a row going back to 3rd inning.

Aaron Judge’s homer in the first inning to about the 2nd row above Wintrust sign in center field gave the Yankees a 1–0 lead. That homer tied Yogi Berra for fifth on the all time Yankees franchise list. The top five had been the same five names since 1957 and the same order (Ruth, Mantle, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra) since 1966. Judge and Berra now both have 358 homers. Berra, who was an 18-time All-Star, had his 358 homers in his 2,120 games in 19 seasons. Judge, who is a 7-time All-Star, has his 358 homers in 1,120 games in 10 seasons. Judge is 7–18 with three homers and four RBI in his last five games after previously being 3–25 in his previous seven games.

Jose Caballero had just his second start in left field with the Yankees. Amed Rosario, who was the third baseman in this game giving Ryan McMahon the game off, made really good play and one hop throw to end the 2nd.

In Judge’s second at-bat, he slammed a down the middle pitch off the top of the wall for a double. Cody Bellinger has best the average against lefties by a lefty in the league. Bellinger is also seventh most difficult to strikeout in the American League and he has 10th best average with runners in scoring position in the league (above .330). He pulled a hard hit double to score Judge in the 3rd inning to give the Yankees a 2–1 lead. After Bellinger’s double, the Yankees only had three hits in the next 6.1 innings the rest of the game.

Mike Tauchman, who has been great at defense during his entire career and robbed a homer when he played for the Yankees, made a great leaping catch to rob Stanton of a homer to end the 3rd inning.

Trent Grisham pinch hit in the 7th inning. He was previously 1–5 with homer as pinch hitter. Grisham walked in the seventh inning and then walked in the ninth inning as well. Stanton had two homers six RBI and a 1.000 OPS in last six games and had an impressive .339 average, a .431 .OBP, nine homers and 23 RBI in his 23 games in August. Stanton went 0–2 with two walks in this game. Ben Rice had routine ground out to shortstop with bases loaded to end the 8th inning.

Lenyn Sosa hit a homer to straight away center off of the usually very reliable Tim Hill to give Chicago a 3–2 lead in the 8th inning. Hill does not allow many fly balls or homers. This was just the seventh homer Hill has allowed in 61.1 innings this season with two of those seven homers coming in his last nine games. Hill has very good command of his pitches and has a very good 2.93 ERA in his 63 games this season.

With the Yankees losing in the top of ninth it was just their second time trailing in the last eight games. Bellinger struck out looking to end the game on a ball that barely got the inside corner. With this win, the White Sox improved to 49–88 and 10–30 in one run games this season. The White Sox have the worst record in the American League and the second worst record in Major League Baseball.
